Australia repeals carbon tax

A stupid move by the most incompetent government in Australia's history. Most governments are given two terms. Abbott will be tossed out after one, or even earlier if the coalition grows a pair.

We repealed the American carbon tax?

(Yes my post will look out of place when the thread is moved to non US politics)

Didn't they get in on a promise to end the carbon tax?

Whatever the merit of the tax, it seems a stretch to say that implementing a policy that made them popular will get them thrown out.

No, they didn't get in on a promise to end the tax. They got in because they were the alternative to Gillard. It's really as simple as that.

The polls won't move in my opinion. Abbott is an idiot without any ability to relate to the electorate. He is also a hopeless manager of government business. Someone pointed out that it takes real talent to get a billionaire miner to vote against repeal of a tax which would cost him dearly. Palmer did this. He has since relented, as he was always going to, because he, along with the government, do not want a double dissolution. There may be other triggers for a double dissolution, but they won't be pulled. As well as the coalition, the loony independents will also be thrown out.

In fact there are already two separate double dissolution triggers that could have been used. And most of the budget looks like it will die in the senate.

that's what you get when you elect ignorant fools in denial of reality.

Simple, but...
Gillard wasn't the alternative.

No, I'm not going to grant you a pass on the spoiler. Sorry. The electorate passed judgement on Gillard for a range reasons, some due to her gender, some generated by non-stop News Limited propaganda and some due to very good policy, but poor political decisions. Rudd was an attempt to minimise the damage, and I think it worked to an extent. But the election was a reaction to Gillard in my opinion.

I'm inclined to agree, based on the amount of vitriol I observed aimed at her - largely by people who I would consider to be swinging voters.

This is about Australia, not the U.S.

I know. The US has not even a Carbon tax to repeal....

and compared to some US senator, Tony Dumb Dumb comes across like a well informed and intelligent dude.

They lied about the carbon tax. It was used to raise the price of fossil fuels, but most of out was returned to taxpayers anyway. When power prices rose by about a100%, they lied that it was all due to the carbon price. In fact most of out was due to spending on infrastructure, much of which was not needed.
