Dowsing by a Skeptic

So how are you not refusing to test it?

Before any sane person sits an exam they make sure they have studied the subject properly. I'm still learning with full intent of taking the examination. Takes time.

The kind of test we're proposing is necessary to find out if there's anything worth studying. It's the first step, not something you need to build up to.

So you are, in fact, refusing to test your claims. Thank you for admitting it.

Hi Mick, why don't you just do a double-blind test for yourself, no need to consider it an exam just a way to make sure you are right.

He apparently hasn't learned to "drive properly," even on his own.

No, I have never refused to test my claims, I'm just not ready to sit the exam yet.

You say you can dowse.
We say: here's a good way to test the claim.
You say you are not ready to test the claim.

How is that not refusing to test the claim?

Please explain in detail what I would need to do to satisfy everyone here.
Several simple protocols have already been suggested and you have been pointed to a thread which discusses such protocols. But if you still need it spelt out for you:

1. Find something that produces a reliable dowsing response. It might be telling the difference between a bucket that has a bottle of water under it and a bucket that doesn't, an opaque container that contains a phone and an opaque container that doesn't - anything, as long as there are no visual clues that could be giving the location away, and your rods respond to one and not the other when you know which is which.

2. Get 6 buckets/opaque containers, whatever it is that you've settled on, and one of whatever it is you are successfully dowsing for (a bottle of water, a phone, whatever you choose)

3. Find a location where there's unlikely to be any confusing signals you might pick up on. Go over the area with your rods to make sure you're not getting any response.

4. Leave the location whilst someone else lines up the six containers and places the one object under/inside one, throwing a die to decide which one

5. The someone else should then call you to say the location is ready and leave - make sure you don't see them and interact with them in any way

6. Go to the location and use your rods to find the object. Record a hit or a miss.

7. Repeat the test several times.

Well as long as they are opaque. A previous test on here suggested something like this:

Divide your lawn into 9 equal sections
Put 1 filled and 8 empty bottles in bags
Ask your wife to place a bottle into each section (chosen in turn by selecting in random by pulling a number from 1-9 out of a hat)
Dowse

Pixel42 beat me to it with much better instructions, please ignore mine.

I can try that at my new place, the place my wife hid the cell phone. There are no distractions there. I can also place the bags far apart.

PS, I think I might do it over a period of a few days.

I would recommend using rigid opaque containers rather than bags, as the shape of the bags might be distorted by the presence of the object. Remember there must be no visual clues.

I look forward to your results.

If I do it from lets say 50 yards away it should help rule out the possibility of visual clues. I think it would make it easier for me to dowse the whole lot at once rather than one at a time.

The distance is not as important as blinding the experiment.

That's a good plan.

I'm pleased to see your adventurous spirit and creativity on display. I remember when I was first wooed by science - it was all curiosity and discovery, with regular doses of amazement. Quite wonderful. Now, however, there's this trend toward regimentation and lock-steppery I find disturbing. Real out-of-the-box thinking like yours isn't as admired as it should be.

Goest thou and dowse my friend. Dowse for your own pleasure, and fie on all the naysayers and linear thinkers. Don't let small minds grind you into the dust of despair. Dowse away, and God bless you sir!
