Okay, this is a gun nut.

My guess is probably wrong. But, I don't think "that would be really stupid and public" is any argument against it.

Someone was either very stupid, or evil. Stupidity is probably more common, so I'm gonna go with that.

My point is that I've seen suggestions for ditching a gun that seem designed to make the perp famous on the internet via the well-known video surveillance.

How does that make a stupid accident less likely than a planned crime? Whoever left it there - for whatever reason - was either oblivious to the video cameras (more likely to be young and/or dumb), or thought they could avoid being identified, or doesn't mind getting caught. I don't know any way to guess which of those is more or less likely. But I wouldn't bet against stupid.

So what is more likely then? Someone who wishes better gun ownership controls to potentially save lives goes out, gets a gun, loads it with live ammo and leaves it lying around in the toy section of a store, hoping that a child will pick it up, fire it and maim or kill other human beings. Or that someone who is not a responsible gun owner took their gun to the store with them, laid it down for a moment while dealing with shopping or a child, then forgot it. No need for a conspiracy theory here that I can see, or even a devious plan. Just human error.

Why would it even be in his hand, requiring him to put it down to deal with something else?

Stupid doesn't preclude deliberate.

Showing little Noodnick that Daddy's gun doesn't have those orange things on it that the toy gun does. The toy gun is a lot prettier! "Oh, someone dropped a new nickel. Here, hold my gun while I pick it up."

Priceless!

But a lot more people drive everyday than carry firearms with them everyday. So rarer cars are safer because they get into fewer accidents?

You claimed that "guns left in toilet" incidents were common like car accidents. Now you're saying that they're not common like car accidents because fewer people use gins regularly. That's like saying unicorn riding accidents are common like car accidents but the reason why no-one ever has one is that there are no unicorns to ride.

Why not back up a touch and say that "although rare, guns left in toilet incidents are not unprecedented and generate less media coverage than guns left in toy store incidents".

PhantomWolf may of course disagree because that Google search seems to indicate that incidents are rare but do generate a fair amount of press coverage.

While I can see why someone would remove their gun when they need to sit on the toilet, I'm still having trouble thinking someone had any valid reason to have a gun in hand in a toy store. You don't go, "dang, I have to unbuckle and pull down my pants to take a crap, now where do I put the gun?" in the middle of a toy aisle. Or if you do, you have bigger problems.

The big story in that scenario isn't that they forgot it, but that they were handling it at all in there.

Of course you were.

That's the way I read it....

I love how many of the top comments are "oh yes, an FNH .45 - that's a nice piece".

Only in America. Literally. Only in America.

Yup I read it as "Only in America" applying to the comments otherwise it would have been

What if she has a gun?
All I can think of when I read this is "Your gun is digging into my hip"

More people get murdered with hammers than with assault rifles.

They can have my hammer when they pry it from my cold dead callused hands.

This is something I've heard many times in argument about gun control. That and large vehicles running over people.

Or maybe it fell out of the carriers pocket and landed right on top of the playschool toys?

Since I carry myself, the weight of the gun is definitely noticeable if it fell out. You'd know it especially with a loaded magazine.

One thing I'm still curious though is if there was a round in the chamber or if it was just the magazine that was loaded
