UKIP a one trick Pony

Via http://www.independent.co.uk/news/u...ing-to-the-educated-and-cultured-9423200.html

A UKIP spokesperson said they had difficulty appealing to the "educated, cultured and young."

Unfortunately that still leaves a large, target rich environment for them to choose from.

Absolutely hysterical!

"People who've read about us won't vote for us!" /paraphrase

Unfortunately that still leaves a large, target rich environment for them to choose from.

:p

We've heard all the screaming scare stories of "uncertainty" for businesses in the context of the Scottish independence referendum - which turned out to be moonshine as investment increased and nobody seems to be that bothered because we'll be staying in the EU.

Why aren't we hearing the far more real and far more extreme scare stories that should be accompanying this threat of leaving the EU? Because talking down UKIP doesn't suit the agenda of the press?

Rolfe.

I really think that Farage and Salmond are treated in the press in the UK in a very similar fashion.

Step 1: Ha ha! Look at these jokers!
Step 2: No, I don't really think they need to be on TV.
Step 3: Yes, they may have a nice "simple" message, but they aren't serious.
Step 4: Look, will you stop looking at them. We are the real parties.
Step 5: Ha ha! We've dug up some gaffes they have made.
Step 6: Didn't you hear us? We dug up some gaffes they made. That means vote for us now!
Step 7: Don't vote for them!!!! They're loons!!!
Step 8: They support Putin!! You know, Hitler!!!!!
Step 9: THIS ISN'T FUNNY!!! THEY MADE GAFFES!!! THEY SUPPORT PUTIN!!!! THEY ARE JOKERSSSSS!!!! RACISTS!! NATIONALSTSSSSS!!!! STOP IT!!

Step 10: Well, naturally at a time like this there is bound to be a certain level of unease among voters who like to express themselves in a protest vote.

Pretty much nailed it, imo. Rinse and repeat.

The sad thing is Salmond isn't a dangerous person politically. Oh Scotland leaving the Union might damage the UK, and votes going to him will hurt two of the main three and could even screw over the Tories should say, the SNP gain seats but Scotland votes No to independence (which is entirely possible) but Nigel Farage is an absolute lunatic and UKIP are genuinely dangerous.

The SNP is tapping into a variety of things in Scotland, only one of which is a possible move to independence, but UKIP are pretty much solely split between votes by idiots who want to rage at the political system but are probably unaware of what they are doing and the kind of person who would probably vote BNP if they felt they could get away with it/could face their actual views on things.

They barely have any policies, they regularly change what few policies they do come out with (see; flat tax and privatisation of the NHS for two big ones) and they attract a lot of absolute raving nutjobs. They speak to the lost, the racist and the moronic and it's something I've never understood.

And as for "opposing the gravy train" - They have Neil Hamilton.

To be fair, UKIP now have a strong representation in voting.

I've never been more pleased to be First Past The Post.

UKIP seem to have gained a very similar number of seats to the Tory losses. I reckon most of their increase in these elections is down to a Tory protest vote. Labour seem to have mainly won from the LibDems unpopularity.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/pol...95/Local-elections-2014-live-results-map.html
So, out of 3625 council seats in total, the UKIP only won 155, i.e., only 4.3%? That's some electoral success.

(How are town councils elected in the UK? Is a town divided into single-seat districts with FPTP?)

I think many people seriously underestimate Alex Salmond when they compare him to Farage. Bear in mind that Salmond has been a Westminster MP since 1987, only giving up his safe seat to move to Holyrood. He is widely acknowledged as a Westminster "big beast" and one of the most talented and effective politicians in the UK. He is now First Minister of Scotland and has been for seven years - by far the longest-serving incumbent of the position in the 15 years the Scottish parliament has existed.

What seems to confuse people is that he is a genuine conviction politician. He is driven by a deep desire for independence for his country, and has been since he was an undergraduate. If he had simply wanted a glittering political career he would have joined the Labour party like his contemporaries.

English politicians don't like this conviction, so they attempt to belittle and sneer at it. In doing so they mislead themselves. They look for hidden tactics and self-interest in Salmond's moves, when usually these things aren't there. Pronouncements on what Salmond "really thinks" or "really wants" in the English press are laughably off the mark. Usually, Salmond gets what he wants by putting forward a straight case, then watching his opposition second-guess him into insanity and playing right into his hands. The "second referendum question" is a case in point.

I don't know if Farage is a conviction politician or not. I suspect not. I think he is a narrow-minded bigot who has found a nice little niche to get far more than his allotted 15 minutes of fame. But to compare Farage and Salmond by observing similar reactions to the two in the English media is to miss the point quite spectacularly.

No, if you are referring to my comparison then you may misunderstand it. I am not saying this to denigrate him at all. I agree that he is extremely effective, and what is more he believes in what he is doing and can reliably be seen to believe in what he is doing.

In all fairness, I think it is now you who is making a damning comparison with that. ;)

The three main parties are abysmal. To say he is better than Cameron, Clegg and Miliband is like saying The Rolling Stones are better than Milli Vanilli.

So who is Frank Farrian in this comparison, and who are the real singers? :boxedin:

That has to be wrong, Sky news has told me that UKIP have had an overwhelming victory and Labour has had their worse defeat ever!

I wander if sky news are becoming like faux news?

Ukip have got 3.9 % of council seats even the BNP got 6% last time.

I don't usually watch Sky news, but in my view it ^distinctly biased against labour and the Lib Dems.
