Seven dead in drive by California shootings

How's this for a compromise? Americans can own whatever or however many guns they like. Tanks, RPGs, you name it. They can carry them in school, church, kids playgrounds, hospitals, and government buildings. However, they should all be made to live together in a new state called Guntopia, and anyone else can leave and live away from them, where no guns are allowed.

Because why is it considered SOP that a guy like this was able to obtain a gun, when he had so many obvious issues?

Americans don't have to consult you for permission of what they can do.

Alan Shifman — a lawyer who represents Peter Rodger, one of the assistant directors on "The Hunger Games" — issued a statement saying his client believes his son, Elliot Rodger, was the shooter. It was unclear how the son would have obtained a gun. The family is staunchly against guns, he added.

Go ****** figure.

The sheriff has just shocked me by pointing out that the guy who did this is "severely mentally disturbed" and was seeing a wide variety of health professionals.

Who'd've thunk it?

The sheriff says that his assessment is based on reading the "manifesto", which we haven't (as far as I know).

So much for early intervention being any good.

the family called police several weeks ago after being alarmed by YouTube videos "regarding suicide and the killing of people."

Apparently, his parents had him evaluated after seeing the videos, but he acted normal during the evaluations, so nothing was done.

I don't see any reason to read "mental illness" into this dude's actions unless you believe that all murderers are de facto mentally ill.

I'm going to have to come back to this thread later. At the moment this forum for some reason is loading painfully slowly and is difficult to use.

Yes, but given the videos, SOMETHING should have been done.

Agree with this, though.

Apologies for interrupting but, for the benefit of those of us following along at home, what do all of these acros/initialisms (TRP, MRM, PUA, MRA) stand for?

It would have been nice. However, as things stand now, in the US, it's hard as **** to commit someone against their will. It pretty much can't happen unless they actually talk about their evil plans during the psych evaluation. And even if they do get committed, they won't be kept in in-patient care more than a couple days before they're released.

This case is insane. I always thought so many of these shooting or terrorist attacks stemmed from men not being able to get laid.... But I never seen a guy outright admit it.

The other thing is... he's driving a beamer.... how can you not get laid? You drive one of them where I live and we might have to lock up our wives.

Yeah, I don't think "getting laid" would have stopped this guy from hating women. He'd probably kill any girlfriend he managed to get after she did something that pissed him off.

Uh huh. Have you considered the possibility that your preconceptions about the motivations that drive women may not be entirely correct?

Once again the streets are littered with the blood and bodies of martyrs willing to give up their lives so patriots can own guns.

:USA: God Bless America! :USA:

MRM = Men's Rights Movement. They believe women are trying to relegate or have succeeded in relegating men to a second-class status using cultural, legal, and political institutions to destroy or marginalize their masculinity and rights as men.

MRA = An advocate of this movement.

PUA = Pick-up artist. They view women as objects existing solely to have sex with men. They express this philosophy by trying to pick up women for sex, sharing "techniques" with each other, and complaining about women that the techniques don't work on.

TRP = No idea.
