Official press release.

http://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2014/05/21/letter-president-war-powers-notification-chad

Dear Mr. Speaker: (Dear Mr. President:)

Approximately 80 U.S. Armed Forces personnel have deployed to Chad as part of the U.S. efforts to locate and support the safe return of over 200 schoolgirls who are reported to have been kidnapped in Nigeria. These personnel will support the operation of intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance aircraft for missions over northern Nigeria and the surrounding area. The force will remain in Chad until its support in resolving the kidnapping situation is no longer required.

This action has been directed in furtherance of U.S. national security and foreign policy interests, pursuant to my constitutional authority to conduct U.S. foreign relations and as Commander in Chief and Chief Executive.

I am providing this report as part of my efforts to keep the Congress fully informed, consistent with the War Powers Resolution (Public Law 93-148). I appreciate the support of the Congress in these actions.

Sincerely,

BARACK OBAMA

We are now officially at war in Africa.

It's a start.

How many "advisers" did Kennedy first send to Vietnam?

That wasn't a war either, right?

Blech. Rightards were bitching that Kosovo was Clinton's Vietnam. Then they waved the flag when Cheney and his cronies commissioned a full-scale invasion of Iraq, to the tune of a trillion dollars and several thousand American lives.

I somehow doubt this dog and pony show over the girls in Nigeria will morph into a military quagmire. But, you can hope.

Can somebody make a "I never realized war was bad until I could accuse Obama of starting" picture?

FWIW, I was in the antiwar movement in the Vietnam era, and in the 1980s I was in the nuclear freeze movement.

In retrospect I believe I was right about Vietnam, and wrong about the nuclear freeze.

And speaking of nukes, did you know Chad has uranium?

I wonder how many countries have more than 80 US military people in them and we are not at war in them. I suspect the number is greater than 50.

Its not clear from that article, but I think the reason it seems the US military is deployed to so many nations, is that we use Marines as embassy guards.

I think the OP is the same poster that was trying to claim that we were at war with Iceland for decades because of a NATO presence. Nothing we say will sway his opinion on this.

And, good on Obama. If we can't help 200+ girls being kidnapped by Muslim extremists, then its time we reconsider spending billions a year on our special forces.

Do you think US should do something about the kidnapped girls, or not?
And speaking of nukes, did you know Chad has uranium?
So what? Uranium is not exactly rare, and US has no shortage of it.

Reality check:

1.) We are not trying to win any hearts or minds in Chad.
2.) We are not at war with Chad.
3.) Chad is not at war.
4.) We are not fighting in Chad.
5.) We are not deploying combat units in Chad.
6.) We are not deploying advisors in Chad.

Chad is, however, a good location to deploy some military folks to look for some kidnapped school girls. This does not mean that the US would never send in combat troops if they could make a difference. If we did, those troops would probably one deploy to perform the rescue mission and then pull out. Just like other hostage rescue missions.

It is debatable if such a mission should be attempted since the girls are likely not all in the same location.

Other than that, the OP and the "We are at war" comments are gross distortions of reality intended to inflame rather than inform. Not the sort of thing one should do on a skeptic site if they wish to communicate with people in and honest and forthright sort of way. If this is supposed to be a good way to communicate, I would suggest getting a job with Russia Today.

Yeah, so does the US and Canada, both moribund industries, nuclear industries being what they are. You can use it in uranium glassWP, I suppose.
