Gun control -- Folks just can't be trusted with ...

He hit the guy 6 times out of 13 shots, I think that's a new NYPD record!

Was there a dude named McLovin with them?

Sixth Person Charged in Murder
At what point does this fall into the "conspiracy" category and get charged accordingly?

  • A sixth person has been charged in connection with the slaying of a 14-year-old girl in the Back of the Yards neighborhood this week.

Police said the gun used to kill 14-year-old Endia Martin on Monday passed through the hands of a Streeterville man before it ended up with the alleged shooter’s uncle.

Floyd Evans, 43, has been charged with possessing a gun without a valid Firearm Owner’s Identification card, and failure to report to his probation officer.

So we have the following:

  • the 14 year old shooter
the 34 year old purchaser of the gun (who transferred it illegally)
the 43 year old middleman (who had no FOID and a probation warrant)
the 25 year old uncle (crippled by gunfire, riding a bus with a gun he knew was going to be used in a fight)
a 32 year old auntie (who knew what was up and did nothing but tag along for the show)
and the 17 year old who tried to hide the gun following the murder.

But remember - Illinois' lax gun laws and Concealed Carry gun owners were completely to blame for this.

So what you're saying is even the police, who receive intensive background and credit checks, as well as years of training, can't be trusted with guns? I guess no one can trusted with them and we should just take them all away since the vast majority of even conceal carry laws don't even require that much.

This is the ideal: No more guns, period. Peace out y'all.

I would argue that it's time we stop acting like we're still in the Bronze Ages. Hasn't there been enough blood shed already?

How do you imagine you can take guns away from people who don't want you to take them?

The ideal of no guns at all is like breatharianism: it's just not possible. Someone will always have guns. The real question is whether you want citizens to have guns as well as the government, or the government alone, because those are the only actual options.

In the opinion of some people, no, there has not been enough bloodshed, and they intend to remedy that situation. If you are ever faced with such a person, what exactly would you do, Mudcat? Wish them away? Try to use reason?

I don't have any sympathy left for the gun crowd, if y'all insist acting like children I'm all for taking your toys and sending you into time out until you decide to act like reasonable adults.

I've managed to get out of any number of such circumstances without using violence. That you can't imagine such solutions is your problem, not mine.

Again I ask: how will you accomplish this? Remember, in your fantasy world your police have no guns with which to threaten these people, because guns are categorically bad and you don't want anyone to have them.

I'll gut them like a freshly landed trout with my handy knife, that's what.

And this is a morally superior option to shooting them... why? And have you ever heard the expression about taking a knife to a gun fight?

If not even people that are reasonably trained in their safe and responsible use can't be trusted to use them properly, then it logically follows no one can be.

I never said anything about oppression, I'm just pointing out that the UK does not live up to Mudcat's ideal.

You don't see armed police on the streets in the UK. Most police never have access to guns: specially trained and licensed police are issued firearms as and when needed to deal with the very rare instances of armed criminal standoff situations. When the gig is over, they return the guns to the lock up.

Many years ago the police were given a referendum on carrying guns, and they voted against it. That's because they knew that if they carried guns, the criminals would too.

In Mudcat's scenario, the State should confiscate everyone's guns. Obviously the police are going to need their guns in order to accomplish that, but why shouldn't they carry on enforcing the law, as they do already, using deadly force? Put all the tantrum heads who want to play at being rebels in gaol in place of the potheads who should all be released, and you would have redressed your idiotic sociopathology.
