Merged Global Warming Discussion II: Heated Conversation

We already can observe the stalled blocking high as a feature of warming in the Arctic. The high was stalled in place for 15 months and is the primary cause of the drought as Pacific storms were steered north by it.

El Nino will certainly break that pattern and refill the reservoirs.

Lightning means fires, heavy rains mean flash floods, mud slides, and levy leaks,...but most of all, it brings the gold out of them thar hills and lays it in the gravel banks at yer feets!

Not this summer, but next, nature should have freshly seeded the banks and shallows of the Sierra Nevada drainage system. Nice, hot sun in the summer days to help offset the mountaintop snow pack, barely above freeze temp., runoff that you have to submerge yourself under to dredge out the shiny, shiny, yellow flakes, rice and nuggets.

I love vacations that pay for themselves and turn a profit!

You'd love in here in North Queensland - site of a wild gold rush complete with cannibals.
River of Gold....it's a good read and some of the nuggets are incredible.

Ever rainy season which we just moved out of the gold rivers are open for panning tho the commercial guys have moved on.

more rain, more gold eh?

Ah, I've heard the stories of the down-under gold! It sounds amazing. Unfortunately, I've been trying to tone down my globe-hopping the last couple of decades (not so good for the planet, and stuff). My little puddle-jumper is pretty green, but it doesn't have the range to safely hop across the Pacific. Nothing says I have to fly, but riding the waves that far takes a serious time investment. Perhaps one of these days.

One of my favorite videos from the Extreme Ice Survey produced by James Balog. Fantastic work!

It's important to remember the size of the helicopter as you watch it.

That's another natural "heavies" concentrator, a lot of the glacial gravel dumps are rich in gold! Beat up flakes, but shiny, shiny!

"The Science of why we Don't Believe in Science" presentation by journalist Chris Mooney if you are not familiar with him.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ANeW7U0qRKo 52 minutes long

No wonder I can't communicate with my denier friends.

He presents that there are four main reasons for motivated reasoning;

-Conspiratorial Thinking - believe AGW is a conspiracy theory
-Distrust - 42% of Republicans trust science and 22% distrust science
-The need for cognitive closure- they look for an immediate answer so they can stop thinking about it
-Individualism or Libertarian-ism - economic liberty as a moral belief, government should not get involved

I had to look twice at the end when he claimed that the more Libertarians learn about science the more they are wrong about AGW due to motivated reasoning!!

Probable causes of the abnormal ridge accompanying the 2013–2014 California drought: ENSO precursor and anthropogenic warming footprint
http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/2014GL059748/abstract

The 2013–2014 California drought was initiated by an anomalous high-amplitude ridge system. The anomalous ridge was investigated using reanalysis data and the Community Earth System Model (CESM). It was found that the ridge emerged from continual sources of Rossby wave energy in the western North Pacific starting in late summer and subsequently intensified into winter. The ridge generated a surge of wave energy downwind and deepened further the trough over the northeast U.S., forming a dipole. The dipole and associated circulation pattern is not linked directly with either El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) or Pacific Decadal Oscillation; instead, it is correlated with a type of ENSO precursor. The connection between the dipole and ENSO precursor has become stronger since the 1970s, and this is attributed to increased greenhouse gas loading as simulated by the CESM. Therefore, there is a traceable anthropogenic warming footprint in the enormous intensity of the anomalous ridge during winter 2013–2014 and the associated drought.
A " traceable anthropogenic warming footprint" is a pretty bold conclusion.

California drought: Sierra snowpack is barely there
http://www.sfgate.com/science/article/California-drought-Sierra-snowpack-is-barely-5446649.php

The snow levels in the Sierra were only 18 percent of average on Thursday, when the last of the season's once-a-month measurements was taken by the California Department of Water Resources. That's worse than last month, when the snowpack was 32 percent of normal for the date.
A drop from 32% to 18% in a month suggests that the snowpack is pretty volatile, but that's before factoring in the UHI, of course .

The third U.S. National Climate Assessment is scheduled for release on May 6.
A preview in the Guardian

Climate change is clear and present danger, says landmark US report
http://www.theguardian.com/environment/2014/may/04/climate-change-present-us-national-assessment

"Climate change has moved from distant threat to present-day danger and no American will be left unscathed, according to a landmark report due to be unveiled on Tuesday.

The National Climate Assessment, a 1,300-page report compiled by 300 leading scientists and experts, is meant to be the definitive account of the effects of climate change on the US. It will be formally released at a White House event and is expected to drive the remaining two years of Barack Obama's environmental agenda.

The findings are expected to guide Obama as he rolls out the next and most ambitious phase of his climate change plan in June – a proposal to cut emissions from the current generation of power plants, America's largest single source of carbon pollution."
Expect to see some serious motivated reasoning come Tuesday. To get the ball rolling : this is political, not scientific. ;)

You know you've studied climate science too much when you get excited about the albedo of the gold :D

LOL!

It's a sign of the fever! sparkles and shiny reflective surfaces antagonize the gold bug stimulating the release of both adrenaline and pleasurable endorphins. More to the point, however, it is the combination of my agricultural roots, my hunting and fishing hobbies and my gem and precious metal prospecting passions that led to my initial openness regarding the changes that climate science started talking about more publically in the '80s.

People that spend a lot of time out in and amongst nature regularly, in intimate interactions with growth cycles, wildlife patterns, and the shifting changes of traditional water cycles, have a strong sense for the changes that have occurred over the last half century.

I don't think I'd argue that the report itself is political versus science, but I am pretty sure that much of the "discussion" of the report's science, will devolve into partisan rancor and inconvenient public policy necessities.

These are the gold bars that were recovered from the wreck of the Geldermalsen in the South China sea. I worked treasure diving in the Gulf of Thailand on the next salvage effort on a mid thirteenth century wreck with the same crew. Also worked with a geologist friend staking claims for a gold mine along the same seam that a large mining company in northern Ontario was working. A buddy is going Placer mining in BC next week. I may chase after some gold in 240 feet of water in the next year or two - love the gold bug!!!!!

For me the first signs of global warming was a night dive on Maui during the El-Nino event of 1998. The ocean was much warmer than normal and I remember wondering if I was crazy when I told my friend that global warming was probably underway. The reefs that I dove so often were now losing coral and species due to the increased heat.

I also remember seeing the pine trees in Utah dying for the first time and later was totally shocked to see the trees all the way up to Banff, Canada were also dying due to the pine beetle infestations. Lumber mills are closing in BC now due to the loss of trees.

I'm always shocked that people have no idea what is going on.

When it remains an academic position it is much easier to dismiss.

Indeed. I guess if your hair doesn't catch on fire when you go outside it can't be that bad

I'm not looking forward to seeing how bad things need to get until the deniers finally admit there is a problem.

Why are these types of posts allowed but mine are deleted ?

This does not appear to be a science forum , it is more like a lovefest for liberals , you folks are a strange bunch

Nevertheless I have great confidence Planet Earth will not comply with the global warming propaganda.

It has already shown distinct signs of refusal.

We can not deny that
