...er...eat fruit and veg that it :D
(sorry for all you lured in under the false pretence of an interesting topic...)

my question is a simple one....in the Uk we are told that we should eat 5 portions of fruit and veg a day...but how is this calculated?

can i sit here and eat a big bag of nuts and chalk off a week's portion? Or is a small quantity over a long period what really does you good?
And who arrived at the "5 a day" anyway? In Japan they apparently recommend 13 portions a day....so who's lying? :D

In Denmark they recommend 6.

Look at the health level of the countries with the highest portions and the lowest. Compaire the health of America to Japan.

In the US, to the extent anyone pays any attention to the "food pyramid" idea, they are usually considering the USDA's verison. I can remember it being quite emphasized in school when I was a youngster - not so much these days.

At any rate, the USDA apparently has moved away from "servings" and now recommends specific amounts. In my case:

Daily:
Grains 7 ounces
Vegetables 3 cups
Fruits 2 cups
Milk 3 cups
Meat & Beans 6 ounces

Specifically in the case of 'veg' they suggest:

Aim for this much every week:

Dark Green Vegetables = 3 cups weekly
Orange Vegetables = 2 cups weekly
Dry Beans & Peas = 3 cups weekly
Starchy Vegetables = 6 cups weekly
Other Vegetables = 7 cups weekly

You are what you eat.
Cider- made from apples
Beer- Hops
Chocolate- May have peanuts.
Bread- made from cereal, which is practically grass for Ed's sake.
Beef- made from cows, which are also grass.

Dammit- I MUST be healthy!
