This has been bugging me on and off for a while. I've summarised what I can remember below. (?) Indicates I'm not too sure of the accuracy of the recollection.
As a youth I remember reading a novel about a man who crawls into a barn to escape a storm. The barn turns out to be a spaceship crewed by hunters and he's kidnapped and hauled off into space.
He falls in love with one of the kidnappers and when disaster strikes on a remote world only she and he survive. Subsequently they are both carted off-world by a group of crab like(?) aliens who sell him into slavery(?) on a world where he works on some sort of fishing operation. He subsequently kills another worker(?) in a fight and then escapes from slavery.
He has a variety of adventures, loses an eye, picks up plenty of scars and a couple of friends (one of which may be a member of the race that enslaved him), finds an alien spaceshp adrift in space and acquires some sort of artefact (a personal shield?), tracks down his love, rescues her and everybody lives happily ever after.
I think that it may have had odyssey in the title. Oh, and I'm pretty sure the hero was black.
Can anyone help?
