Yet Another Press Fiction - FOX

Earlier Friday, FOXNews.com posted an item purporting to contain quotations from Kerry. The item was based on a reporter’s partial script that had been written in jest and should not have been posted or broadcast. We regret the error, which occurred because of fatigue and bad judgment, not malice.

Damn, that was quick. They didn't even try to say it was "fake but true".

Who gets fired in this case? I would like to at least hear from the reporter first.

I'll bet the reporter gets fired, assuming he knew or should have known that the possibility of this getting picked up and reported existed. If it's a cub, he/she might just get a good talking-to and sent to cover the fighting in Fallugia -- up close and personal.

Which would appear, if everyone is being genuine(and this is the internet, so we must assume no one is lying) that fox photoshoped a handshake pic.

It was Carl Cameron, chief political correspondent. If fired, will it be for penning Republican talking points in his spare time, or for screwing up by letting it get published?

The latter, of course, assuming what I suggested earlier.

How so? I looked at the two photos and I can't see what might have been photoshopped. The only diff I can see between the two photos is that they were taken at slightly different times and from slightly different positions. I guess the Fox photo has more color contrast but I doubt that's a photoshop enhancement. If it is, I can't imagine why.

I'm no fan of Fox, but I think I have to agree. I think Kerry actually looks better in the Fox photo. His neck is less wrinkly.

And here's a story from Fox quoting someone from "Communists for Kerry," which is clearly a satire group:

Of course, there were some Kerry supporters in attendance who had no doubts whatever about their candidate.

"We're trying to get Comrade Kerry elected and get that capitalist enabler George Bush out of office," said 17-year-old Komoselutes Rob of Communists for Kerry.

"Even though he, too, is a capitalist, he supports my socialist values more than President Bush," Rob said, before assuring FOXNews.com that his organization was not a parody group. When asked his thoughts on Washington's policy toward Communist holdout North Korea, Rob said: "The North Koreans are my comrades to a point, and I'm sure they support Comrade Kerry, too."

It is unclear whether the Kerry campaign has welcomed the Communists' endorsement.
WTF? Notice also in this story that voters who have changed impressions of the candidates from this first debate are referred to as "flip-floppers."

Fox News is a joke.

Is this the retracted storyline? It so it was a joke that FOX quickly retracted and apologized for. There's a thread on this.

One of the photos has to be photoshopped (or paintshopped or whatever) - The angle is identical for both faces (but funnily enough, not for the background). Just look at (or even measure - best with a desktop ruler like cool ruler ) the width of both men's hair (e.g. from Kerry's ear to his neck and from Bush's forhead to the top of his head - on both images). The slightest shift in position (left-right, up-down) would alter the mesured values, but they are identical in both pictures.
Then maybe Bush came one step closer for the second photo, thus causing himself to look taller - no, because the width of both men's head is identical on both pictures.
So if
1.all values are the same except for the distance between the two heads and Bush's height and
2. We know that one of the pictures has been loaded in an image processing application, because there's no other explanation for the shifted or vanished vertical line in the background, next to Kerry's head (how dumb/lazy can some photoshoppers be!),
I think it's safe to consider a manipulation of the two figures probable.

Still I think that Bush looks better in the left picture than in the right one.

I am not an expert by any means, but:

facial expressions are different between the 2 photos.
Kerrys sleeve buttons are lower resolution in 2nd photo.
distance between the 2 is greater in 2nd photo
Bush's head is higher in relation to the background, while Kerry's head is at the same elevation.

Could it be that a second camera caught Bush on his tippy-toes a few seconds before or after the AFP photo?

If (big if) there was doctoring, the height is the interesting part. It's something that much attention is paid to by candidates/handlers.

Add: Bush is 6'0'' (or slightly less, per the article) and Kerry is 6'4''. forbes

I don't like Fox too much, but I seriously doubt they would Photoshop those photos. That seems like something NewsMax.com or Drudge would do, not Fox News.

I just watched the Fox News from San Francicso and I must admit it seemed relatively "fair and balanced". (Although this is after watching 2 hours of "Cops" and "Most Wanted") About 1/4 way into the news Fox first reported on Bush's "tired" responses to the debate and also gave Kerry about equal time for his daily comments (with no analysis on both).

What breaks my heart when someone in the news organization pulls some dirty tricks, is that the Rush Limbaughs and the O'reillys repeat the lies. When it comes to light that it the news bits were fabricated, nothing more is heard, but the gist of the lies have been planted in the collective conscience (for those who think Jung).

Charlie (Fox booster?) Monoxide

The impression I get is that Kerry is saying something to Bush and he is simply leaning in to hear it, making him seem shorter. Seems to be much ado over posture.
The impression I get is that Kerry is 6'4" and Bush is 5'10". I get that impression from the NPR commentators saying "Kerry is about 6'4" and Bush is 5'10". I don't think height will ever be a factor in my voting choice.
