Since this thread may have some more direct relevance in this forum, I am cross posting these posts here as well. Hopefully under the circumstances this is not a violation of forum rules:

Thread Name: Open Access/PubMed Central & Copyright Restrictions

I am not sure where on here to place this but thought this would be as good and as relevant a place as any. The issue of people pouncing on other people over copyright restrictions frequently comes up here. Today I was introduced to a new NIH website called PubMedCentral which indexes all sorts of journal articles and places their content and abstracts in the non-commercial public domain. The moderators and members here may find a visit worthwhile and interesting. I went to the main site and entered the name of this publication in the search string and got back its first TOC with clickable links as the Craig indicates below.-s.g.

The following e-mail was received by me (sg) from a colleague and editor of a herpetological publication which contains the relevant links:

Dear Steve,

The journal AMPHIBIAN AND REPTILE CONSERVATION [ARC], starting with this issue, will be open-access and available on the Internet for free downloading and distribution. This means you may distribute these articles to anyone on the Internet with no restrictions whatsoever. If you are interested in helping any serial publication become open-access, being permanently archived on PubMed Central (www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov), and/or indexed with CrossRef (www.crossref.org) let me know and I can help. All author(s) will now retain copyright to all submitted material in ARC as well. The journal will continue to be printed in hard copy (~ 3,000 copies) for worldwide distribution to libraries, institutions, and individuals.

Attached are the upcoming articles (and cover) to appear in the next issue of ARC [November 2003 (Vol. 3, no. 1)]. Thought you might find them helpful and/or interesting.

One thing to note, the paper DOI numbers listed in the attached articles are presently being submitted to CrossRef and the articles will be available online as open-access (for more information on OA see: www.plos.org) very soon (archived at PubMed Central). We'll let you know when they are up.

As some may think this is only for a herpetology journal, and don't want to bother accessing the link themselves, I am reprinting the list of journals on open access herewith. No doubt some may be of value in the future of this board. As this open access thing blooms the moderators may want to consider modifying their stance on citations and full text quotes from these:

As this open access thing blooms the moderators may want to consider modifying their stance on citations and full text quotes from these:...

Nonsense, Grenard. PMC does not hold the copyright on those journals. It does not claim to hold the copyright. Copyright remains with either the author or the publisher. You do not have the right to violate those copyrights.

Cheers,

"Who controls copyright privileges for the material archived in PubMed Central?

Copyright to all material deposited in PMC remains with the publisher or individual authors, whichever is applicable. PMC is simply an archive and does not claim copyright on any material in the archive."

PubMed Central

Steve,

Your post ought to be either withdrawn or corrected. Archiving to PubMed Central does not mean relinquishing of either the publisher's or author's copyrights.

Cheers,

Who wants to scroll through and/or read long quotes anyway? It's much better to post the link, then people can access that in a separate window if they want, without making the discussion scroll off the page. The originals usually have better formatting than a pasted excerpt anyway, making them easier to read.

Steve has a bad habit of posting long lists of papers, UNLINKED, and saying, hey, look at all this. There's no way I'm going to start finding these one by one, though if they appeared as links there's a chance I might at least have a look.

The idea that we might get the entire papers dumped in the forum as cut-and-paste does not strike me as a significant improvement on this, however.

Rolfe.
