Wordpress.com, which hosts over a million blogs on all kinds of subjects, has now been blocked throughout Turkey. This is because, it seems, one Wordpress blogger rashly dared to question Islamic Creationism, with the result that a Creationist took him to court and, incredibly, got the backing of the Turkish Government in issuing a blanket ban on the entire output of the site.

If you agree that this is an outrageous violation of free speech you can sign a petition to fight state-approved censorship.

Whoa, this is heavy if it is true. Somehow I doubt they realized what they just did. Anyway, how does the blocking work? It's not as though the entire Internet traffic to Turkey goes through a single line, does it?

They do it by forcing local ISPs to exclude certain URLs. China has been doing it for years.

I suppose if you don't mind making an international dial up call you could pick it up outside Turkey. But if you want broadband you'll have to use local services. Sorry, I'm not an expert but as I say China does this as well - maybe some experts on the forum can explain.

In its second report on women's role in social, economic and political life in Turkey, the European Parliament emphasised that respecting human rights, including women’s rights, is a condition sine qua non for Turkey's membership of the EU. According to the report, Turkey's legal framework on women's rights "has in general been satisfactory, but its substantive implementation remains flawed".

This seems to be the big blocker and might be a tough change for the islamic Turkey. Also Turkey's admission into the EU must be unanimously agreed upon by the member-states. That is unlikely to happen.
