To review, she was the lesbian who toed the party line and supported Gillard by not supporting gay marriage. Now she is trying to change the party policy.

Senator Wong today backed a motion passed at the ALP conference in South Australia for a federal policy change in favour of gay marriage.

The openly gay senator from South Australia seconded an amended motion by the Florey sub-branch at today's conference.

In doing so, she broke her silence over the national debate on equal marriage rights with a deeply personal speech about the need for the Labor Party to respect the principles of equality.

An amendment moved by dominant Right factional head senator Don Farrell to water down the motion, to one of wider consultation, was defeated by two votes, 90 to 88.

Senator Farrell warned that federal Labor would lose power if there was a change to the policy.

Linky.

Many are calling this a reversal, and are hoping that she is no longer a "traitor".

Personally, I think she is following through with the proper channels. Parties work differently outside of the US, and she is doing what she can properly do. Yes, it is brashly political, but it takes more than half-nekkid people in parades to get things done.
