Some 50 people have been arrested in Iran's clerical capital of Qom after police broke up a crowd that had assembled to watch the rumoured execution of a half-woman half-tigress, the Jomhuri-Eslami newspaper reported Sunday.

According to the report, a large crowd turned up in a square in the city to watch the hanging of the woman-beast, only to be met by police who attempted to convince them that the bizarre rumour was in fact absolutely false.

A local journalist contacted by AFP explained that elaborate rumours had been circulating whereby a woman had "insulted religious values" during the fasting month of Ramadan and as divine punishment had had her head turned into that of a ferocious feline.

"Drawings of the woman with the head of a tigress were even distributed in the city, especially in schools," said the journalist, who asked not to be named.

Well, someone made drawings, who wouldn't be satisfied with that kind of proof?

Sorry, Yahweh, but people who believe this kind of carp are deserving of derision.

It scares me that, even in Iran, enough people would believe that a woman had been cursed with a tigers head to form a large crowd.

On the other hand, it doesn't surprise me, I have seen people here in the US (where, I presume, we are more educated) believe things just as silly.

I'm disappointed that the woman was only said to have the head of a tiger. She should have had a tiger type torso so she'd have had 6 boobs. Of course if she wore Hijab she could hide that fact.

I think you're all sooooo closed minded. After all what is more likely ?

a) there is a woman with the head of a tiger (as her head not as a souvenir)

b) a wild rumour spreads through a slack-jawed mob of half-starved and dehydrated Iranian yokels

The fact that the police are trying to cover it all up certainly proves it to me. It's a failure to recognise important facts like this which is holding back the science of cryptozoology and is preventing us from provig the existence of god(s).

I say the U.S. send in a task force of, say, 200,000 to retrieve this proof of the existence of a Christian god whether Iran want us to or not. We'll not have a bunch of "towel-heads" telling us what we can, and cannot do

From about 50 feet away in a crowded square, it might look like a woman had been transformed into a woman-tiger... especially to the gullible and ignorant.

If God changed her head into a tiger's head for "insulting religious values," then isn't it somewhat disrespectful of God's wishes to hang her. I mean, God already metted out His punishment.

Why a tiger? Why not an unclean animal; that would be more of a punishment in a fundamentalist country.

This whole thing doesn't sound particularly Islamic, except for the "insulting religious values" part.
