Wireless router type help

I had previously bought a cheap wireless-G router to experiment with my PSP wifi. I didn't get anything more powerful because I was using a desktop PC. Now that the dead desktop has been replaced by a more portable notebook, I realised that I had problem accessing the signal beyond my study where the router is located. The signal drops to less than 10% in my living room and bedroom.

I'm planning to upgrade to an N router. However, I've been told that even though the N router may be able to transmit stronger signals to my notebook over a wider range, it may not be able to detect the weak signals coming from my notebook, and I would need to get a range extender for my notebook. Is this true? Though the argument appears to make some sense I'm rather suspicious of this as all notebooks come with standard wifi. I haven't noticed any extended wifi transmitters for notebooks.

Thanks for any help.
