Rudd doesn't have the numbers. There is the notion that the only reason he went in the first place was because the 'faceless men' didn't like him. Just about the whole caucus didn't like him. He is a highly intelligent and capable person, but suffers from the common failing of a lot of these people in failing to delegate and listen. He got them into power, but a lot of his party came to hate him. If he had learned his lesson, he might be worth getting back into power. From what I can read between the lines, he has learned nothing. The Labor party would be better off keeping Gillard as PM till just before the next election, then putting up someone new, like Smith or Shorten. Changing leaders now would be crazy, just gives Abbott more time to do his pit bull routine on them. Gillard is gone anyhow, leave her in place to take the lumps. She is actually good in the role of negotiator, and the current power structure is all about negotiation. She has got the NBN and Carbon Pricing bills through. The longer Labor stays in power, the harder it will be to undo them.
