eg most appear to believe that most Christians are militant fundies. This does not exactly display brilliant powers of deduction (or even a casual grasp of reality).

Its the same old thing for both sides. The noisy ones are the ones you remember. Few Christians (in my experience) are fundamentalist bible thumpers. Few atheists worry overly about the Pledge of Allegiance.

It's all a disguise, a ruse... to help us fulfill our evil agenda...

... don't tell anyone I told you, k? ;)

:D

A miscommunication, perhaps... they talk more about militant fundies becuse those are the christians that bug them. Most atheists I have encountered are very friendly to any Christian that respects the beliefs of others.

It's been my experience that atheists are often called "intellectuals" by those who try to discredit them. The symbols of atheism are scientists and secular professors.

Don't know why that's considered an insult. Better than the alternative.

I have been sampling posts in this forum generally where they refer to Christians and none yet have born out what you say. In fact most that refer to fundamentalism specify they are talking about "fundies" rather than Christians in general.

Do you have an example of what you are talking about?

(bolding performed by me)

Nah, atheists are people who don't believe.

It seems like everyone tends to forget John Gabriel's Greater Internet (F-bomb)wad Theory...

You're right. You don't display brilliant powers of deduction or a casual grasp of reality...

Most of the complaints about militant fundies are about fundamentalists, or Christian fundamentalism. The compalints about Christianity in general are usually against the unsubstantiatible, unfalsifiable claims of organized religion, and the fundamentalists serve as an example of how the claim to absolute morality is not really absolute. In fact, posters often remind others that fundamentalism is little more than a third of Christianity, a minority at best. I can see how, by not displaying brilliant powers of deduction or a casual grasp of reality, you might confuse this with the idea that most Christians are fundamentalists.

both "fundamentalist" and "christian" are widely concieved in a vague way. I would like that christian would be conceived as "following Christ", but in some cases the word christian is attributed to other things. Fundamentalist...well I dont even know what that means anymore, you could fully attribute that to many things without much question, thus abstractly confusing disputes and agreements.

You can't be serious. Bounce around this forum (not to mention others) and you'll see plenty.

Oh by the way, it's obvious this thread was intended as a parody of the "Why Doesn't Jesus Sound Smart" thread. However that topic was discussing a single individual. It did not paint an entire class of people as stupid. I don't know what you are upset about.
Yep.

The title should have been, "Why doesn't Penn Jilette sound smart", or something like that. (And I'd love to hear someone defend that point.)

What do you mean by a christian?

I have a friend who thinks there might as well be a god, remembers a few primary school stories of Jesus, who seems OK to him, loves christmas carols, remembers about 3 of the so-called commandments, sees church as a place for weddings, christenings and funerals and wouldn't recognise his vicar. He calls himself a christian although the above is about as deep as it goes.

'Cause he sounds like a character from a David Mamet play?

Oh, wait, no...that just [Rule 8] makes him [Rule 8] sound like a [Rule 8] sailor.
