Why does my WinXP keep getting updates?

We're several months into the post XPocalypse era, or so I thought. Still I am getting fairly regular updates; and I haven't used the register hack Microsoft warns against. Just today I got another one.

Has some nefarious malware managed to take over the Windows update mechanism to do God knows what to my poor old laptop, or has Microsoft been sending these updates without telling anyone?

I got my last update post XPocalypse, and that was shortly before my XP totally kacked. The timing may be purely coincidental. I no longer kept anything of value on that computer as it had required a total re-install 4 times previously. Still, it lasted a long time.

IIRC, Microsoft relented on security updates and is still supplying those.

I knew about the extra April update, but not the June one, but I have been getting more updates. I certainly haven't paid for extra updates. I don't use Security Essentials, I use F-Secure instead for my anti-virus needs, so it's not that.

Java updates are something completely different, I don't think I would confuse them with OS updates. I have turned off Java anyway.

Turn off the updater if you don't want the updates.

The updater can be set to provide more than just MS updates.
