Why do most middle eastern religions hold dogs in contempt?

Apparently, Moroni was supposed to visit Mohammed but didn't because he had a dog in the room. So, he ordered all the dogs killed. It was pointed out that dogs can be handy, so he ordered all the black dogs killed and the others only used for hunting, herding and security.

I had a Saudi tell me that a dog narc'ed on Mohammed when he was hiding from people that wanted to kill him and another say it was because they kept peeing on Mosques.

I wasn't implying otherwise. I was merely commenting on the "peeing on mosques" explanation, which struck me as odd given that the tops of mosques must be as covered with bird**** as any other building.
