Who wrote the Koran

I was told a story at work today by a mad religious Armenian (nice guy really). He told me a story passed down through his family for quite a few generations. I had never heard it before and I would like to know the gist of it.

Searched for a tag on this but found nothing, other than a funny thread about the koran knowing the speed of light. Still smiling at that one.

Simplified version:
He has stated that a non-muslim wrote the koran and mohommad was impressed by it. To get the hand of mohommad's sister, they set up a scam where he passed this book he had written, to mohommad via a well. Mohommad then double crossed the author and after espousing to everyone preseent that this book was gods law, instructed them to throw a stone into the well if they were believers. The author obviously died and this became the 'mountain' that muslims talk about.

No you have it all wrong.

God wrote it through the hand of Mohommad, praise be upon him.

Seriously though, who cares who wrote, all the evidence points to a man and not a god. I have heard so many stories, and when you think aobut it, there were probably skeptics to the religion for over 1300 years, I would imagine some of the stories are taken just a serious as the religion that you can't seperate fact from fiction. Some people even claim the koran can't be older than 700 years.

The accepted conclusion is that the Koran wasn't even finished when Muhammad died so it is quite unlikely that he nicked it from someone else!

I read once long ago that Muhammad who was a complete illiterate decided to start his own religion so he went around listening to Christians, Jews and the local pagans. He got his own ideas and he hired a scribe and over a period of time The Koran was written. Actually all Islam is is an inaccurate copy of Christianity, Judaism and paganism tossed into one big nonsensical book. He was the L Ron Hubbard or Joseph Smith of his day.

That story seems unlikely. The Koran was written over a long period of time.

I think it was finished by the time Mohammed died. It may not have been collected together, though. And there are some stories that verses have been left out.


As for the author.
Probably a few people. The Christianity involved is anti-trinity (with the trinity perhaps reffered to as God, Jesus and Mary -- though some say the Quran didn't intend that as a description of the trinity); non-official gospels are quoted, especially that of Thomas (see stories about Jesus talking while a baby, and making statues of birds that come to life). There's also plenty of Judaism in it, with most OT prophets getting a mention.

Mohammed travelled a lot and met a lot of people. Even if he was illiterate -- that wouldn't stop him studying poetry since most poetry was memorised at the time, anyway. I've met plenty of musicians who play good music without being able to read or write music.

My guess would be that a few authors were involved.
 
Thank you very much folks. It would appear that the whole story is a confused mess, just like the jeebus story.

How do people follow such tripe?

I heard a rather similar story from (believe it or not) a Syrian Orthodox nun at an obscure church in Jerusalem. I later learned that versions of this story are rather common, and used as a way of trying to discredit Islam.

I wouldn't put much stock in it :-).

I would like to think it happened. Would be good to show these beliefs up for what they really are. The old "Smoke and fire" saying comes to mind.

Maybe I should have faith in the story's authenticity. hahahahahaha. Sorry, couldn't help myself. :)
 
Eh, Free Inquiry had a pretty good article on this stuff recently...don't know if it's up on the web yet. Basically, the Koran wasn't written at all until significantly after Mohammad's death, and was put together as part of some political move or another. Before that point, nobody who ran into the Muslims records them as having a holy book of any sort.

That sounds suspiciously like another book of the same ilk. Written years after the fact.

Hope the authors remembered everything correctly?
