Whitney Houston

A great singer!

I loved her voice, as clear as a bell. Perfect!

What was said at her funeral stunned me.

Several speakers indicated that her greatest gift to us was that she showed us how to "love the Lord".

If she was 'one' with the Lord, why was she so depressed that she turned to drugs and alcohol?

I would imagine that in a eulogy for a dead hero, a similar phrase would be uttered; 'he loved his country' (State).

I really liked Kevin Costner's 17 minute eulogy.

It was sincere, balanced, and he described Whitney as a flawed human with great talent.

I can respect that Kevin also said that her singing in Heaven would please the angels and the Lord.

Her greatest gift to mankind was that she loved the Lord?

Would you wish for these words in your eulogy?

I have given instructions that my funeral will be completely secular. No words of mumbo jumbo or invocations to sky daddies.

That said, I would be dead so it wouldn't matter what was said about me.

Funerals are only for the living.

I liked her voice, but the sycophantic quasi-religious crap that I heard about her on the radio the day she died turned my stomach.

In undergrad I got into a discussion with my friend Eric about what we would want for our eulogies. We finally agreed that we would want the director of the funeral to ask for a moment of silence for the attending to reflect on how we touched their lives... & a few seconds in having that one person "remember that time he/I made them laugh, they snort & someone else gets it & chuckles, & on & on until the place is filled with laughter.

I didn't know it at the time but he had sickle cell. He died a few weeks later. At the funeral, the preacher asked for a moment of silence. I was still in shock so I had forgotten about that discussion. After a few seconds I get a clear as day picture of Eric in my head & he says "that's your cue cupcake".
I responded with "BWAAAAHAHAHA!" Everybody got it, everybody laughed even his parents. Seemed like it went on for hours.

I still haven't thought of a better eulogy.

You should've seen the coverage of the funeral. Lots of "look at me!", right over the casket.

One speaker even brought up the idea that WH didn't needlessly embellish her singing with extraneous stuff... and then people got up and diva'd their butts off.

I have given instructions that mine shall be fancy dress. I haven't decided what, yet, but I think vicars and tarts would be fun.

I avoided the funeral but the radio coverage of her death suggested that she had invented singing.

Really? I take it you've never been to a black Southern Baptist funeral before. This was pretty typical except for the size.

Several speakers indicated that her greatest gift to us was that she showed us how to "love the Lord".

I think the service was mostly meant for her mother and daughter. Her faith is probably what most of the speakers thought they needed to here. Bear in mind that Whitney's daughter was just taken off suicide watch.

I don't know what Whitney's actual religious life was like but she was only human. All people are vulnerable to stress and sickness including mental illness, depression, and addiction. Religious faith helps some people cope with those problems but it's no substitute for professional medical and psychological treatment.

I personally don't care what's said at my funeral as long as it brings some comfort to my family and friends.

Did it really? I don't find it surprising at all.

If she was 'one' with the Lord, why was she so depressed that she turned to drugs and alcohol?

Could they have meant that now she's one with the Lord? I miss so much by not watching celebrity funerals. Performers often turn to drink and drugs and not necessarily from depression. They may feel they need it for weight loss, stamina, to unwind. Some get past it, but once that snowball starts to roll it takes on a life of its own.

You timed it? That seems like a really long-ass eulogy.

Her greatest gift to mankind was that she loved the Lord? Would you wish for these words in your eulogy?

No danger of that at present. I'd prefer accuracy especially if it's flattering. Leaving written instructions is very considerate, but is no guarantee.

I caught a bit of a news story about the funeral and found myself wondering about the comment saying she is now singing for The Lord.

Is it reasonable, based on the teachings of the church, to assume that she went to heaven rather than hell?

'Reasonable' and 'teachings of the church' in the same sentence?

No soup for you!!

Oh come on Mr Complexity. It was some loss. She sang a couple of good songs and had a nice voice. She could have sung many more but now won't. She did not appear to be an evil or cruel person.

The World is smaller for her death.

Yes there was a lot of hype but it was not her fault.

When Bob Dylan shuffles off I'll be terribly upset because he is a couple of months older than I. :(

she was an outspoken critic for a healthy lifestyle, she was a crack addict

she stood up for womens rights, by allowing Bobby Brown to physically abuse her

she was the queen of pop music she was the princess of pop, after Queen Elton

she fought for racial equality she made a few million in S Africa after Nelson Mandela was elected

I have nothing but good things to say about her, the most paramount of which is that she was hot for ten minutes in her twenties and I may have spannered a few off while she was on top of the pops when I was a kid.

So don't these things come in threes anyway, which apparently immortal but secretly troubled black star will be next.
I hope its not Darth Vader
:D
