Whither Gun Control?

" gun control debates have been filled with apocalyptic claims about what will happen if gun control is not adopted. "

Really? Because I've seen plenty more apocalyptic claims about what will happen if gun control is adopted.

I think the mainstream gun control people have got what they wanted, and are satisfied.

However the gun-rights people still cry over how Kerry or Democrats would confiscate all firearms from US, except the "liberal elite"..

Because you are blinded by your bias. Both sides have made apocalyptic prediction.

Can you support this?

Do you side with the authoritarian government or the free citizens?

I see the gun thing as a state by state fight. Not really a fed issue.

I think many people are OK with the amount of gun control that is out there. There are only a very few who think ALL guns should be banned. That fringe isnt going to get anywhere.

The real concearn now is wh illegal gun carriers. How do you get them? They alraedy ignore the gun control laws so more GC law wont do anything.

A for 1st Q:
Or maybe because I live in Indiana...

A for 2nd Q:
The numbers in the march, perhaps. I mean, we are pulling conclusions from it. This is mine.

A for 3rd Q:
I side with free citizens, naturally. But I can do that AND vote for a Democrat. Republican can hardly be counted on to protect the free citizens.

Not meaning to be some sort of party hack but maybe that's because Republicans feel, much more than Democrats, that free citizens can protect themselves. Especially if they're well armed.

Oh dear...

From the article

— Crime did not fall in England after handguns were banned in January 1997. Quite the contrary, crime rose sharply. Yet, serious violent crime rates from 1997 to 2002 averaged 29 percent higher than 1996; robbery was 24 percent higher; murders 27 percent higher. Before the law, armed robberies had fallen by 50 percent from 1993 to 1997, but as soon as handguns were banned, the robbery rate shot back up, almost back to their 1993 levels.

From today's Daily Mail (UK): "A former rugby star was charged with murder yesterday after mistaking his daughter for a car thief and shooting her in the family driveway". Apparently, South African international Rudi Visagie heard someone in the driveway early Sunday morning and, believing it was a thief stealing his daughter's car, shot from the bedroom window. The 'thief' turned out to be his daughter, and she died later in hospital.

I'll wait for Ian Osborne to offer the source or answer the question before I trust your ESP abilities.

He doesn't need ESP abilities - just reading skills. The piece clearly said he's South African. As for the source - didn't I already say it was the Daily Mail?

Finally, as Shaun from Scotland has pointed out many times (apparently without success), guns are not illegal in the UK, just heavily restricted. That's why we get far fewer incidents such as this one.

I guess it's impossible for a South African to live in the UK? Just because he is South African doesn't mean he is in South Africa.

I would like people to know that firearms are not illegal in Canada before someone tries to even imply that they are. No-one suggested they are; this is just a pre-emptive post. Thankyou, Carry on.

You had no reason to believe he was in the UK. Having mentioned his nationality, if he'd been living anywhere other than South Africa, I would have said so.

The Daily Mail's a print newspaper.
