First, McCain is polling lower than Obama among Republicans in Iowa!

The changes among Republican voters since March are dramatic. Romney is now the preferred candidate at 21.8 percent — double his March support.

Giuliani’s support, 10 percent, decreased by almost 8.5 percent. McCain’s support has collapsed in Iowa. His support among registered Republicans dropped from 14.4 percent in March to 1.8 percent in July-August. UI political scientists note that McCain has been passed in popularity not only by former Sen. Fred Thompson, R-Tenn., who earned 5.2 percent support, but also by a Democratic challenger, Obama, who is supported by 6.7 percent of Republicans. No other candidate received more than 3 percent support. (emphasis added)

Meanwhile, Newt dropped another hint yesterday.

Speaking at a National Press Club luncheon, Gingrich said he will decide whether to run in late September or early October.

Best of all, he pretty much said that McCain is a goner.

Of the GOP candidates, Gingrich cited four as “serious”: former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani and former Sen. Fred Thompson (Tenn.), who is expected to announce his candidacy in early September.

Remember, in the rush by crazy-ass state parties to be "first in the nation," or "first in the south," these contests are being moved up earlier and earlier. Voting begins in December. Do you really think that after McCain captures under 3% in Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina by mid-January he'll really stick it out until late March or beyond?

But I guess my question really means will he stick until the first contests or bow out before. I think he'll be gone before Iowa/NH. He may not comprehend the inevitable in Iraq, but he will at home.
