While US support for Israel certainly provides for a lot of the Islamist animus I believe that it was the presence of US troops in Saudi Arabia that angered Bin-Laden. Never mind that those troops were there at the invitation of Saudi Arabia. Never mind they were there to protect it from foreign invasion. Never mind that they never once interfered with holy pilgrimages.

Indeed The Power of Nightmares is a fantastic 3 part series, and shows that Al Quaeda as a coherent organisation just doesn't exist, I'm not sure about its accuracy but it certainly casts the US+UK governments in a rather damning light.
