Where Do You Fit?

Interesting Zakur.

I took the survey and found that I'm a staunch Conservative who needs to go to church more often. :)

A few false dichotomies there.

And let me get this straight ... when they talk about the government protecting "morality" in society, they mean "social-conservatives' ideas of sexual morality", don't they?

It reminds me of the joke in (?) CS Lewis. "Seven deadly sins!" exclaimed the young man. "But what are the other six?"

I am disaffected, due to one or two drinks this evening, I thought it said disinfected.

There's a few false dichotomies on the test. Oddly, I score just barely liberal. I show signs of both liberal and enterprise. Yeah. Ok. Whatever.

I protest! I am not a commie!

OK, this won't come as much of a surprise to people who read my posts. I'm an "Enterpriser."

Basic Description
As in previous studies conducted in 1987, 1994 and 1999, this extremely partisan Republican group’s politics are driven by a belief in the free enterprise system and social values that reflect a conservative agenda. Enterprisers are also the strongest backers of an assertive foreign policy, which includes nearly unanimous support for the war in Iraq and strong support for such anti-terrorism efforts as the Patriot Act.
True, but I'm more of a "weak" supporter of the USA PATRIOT Act. And even that's partly because most of its provisions have applied to me since long before that law was passed and the ACLU didn't cry for me!

Defining Values
Assertive on foreign policy and patriotic; anti-regulation and pro-business; very little support for government help to the poor; strong belief that individuals are responsible for their own well being. Conservative on social issues such as gay marriage, but not much more religious than the nation as a whole. Very satisfied with personal financial situation.
True except that I am actually quite liberal on social issues such as gay marriage.

Who They Are
Predominantly white (91%), male (76%) and financially well-off (62% have household incomes of at least $50,000, compared with 40% nationwide). Nearly half (46%) have a college degree, and 77% are married. Nearly a quarter (23%) are themselves military veterans. Only 10% are under age 30.
Over-30 well-off white male, college, but unmarried and not a veteran.

Lifestyle Notes
59% report having a gun in their homes; 53% trade stocks and bonds in the stock market, and 30% are small business owners – all of which are the highest percentages among typology groups. 48% attend church weekly; 36% attend bible study or prayer group meetings.
Gun and stocks. I'll have a business someday -- I'm waiting for the right opportunity. Not so much for the church thing.

2004 Election
Bush 92%, Kerry 1%. Bush’s most reliable supporters (just 4% of Enterprisers did not vote)

Party ID
81% Republican, 18% Independent/No Preference, 1% Democrat (98% Rep/LeanRep)
Yes and yes.

Media Use
Enterprisers follow news about government and politics more closely than any other group, and exhibit the most knowledge about world affairs. The Fox News Channel is their primary source of news (46% cite it as a main source) followed by newspapers (42%) radio (31%) and the internet (26%).
Don't like Fox News much better than the others. My primary source for "news" is the Wall Street Journal and financial wires; my primary source for follow-up news is original sources when available.

I scored as a 'disaffected' which is no big surprise.

Disaffecteds are deeply cynical about government and unsatisfied with both their own economic situation and the overall state of the nation. Under heavy financial pressure personally, this group is deeply concerned about immigration and environmental policies, particularly to the extent that they affect jobs. Alienated from politics, Disaffecteds have little interest in keeping up with news about politics and government, and few participated in the last election.

THough I seem to be a pretty atypical one. For instance, I DO have an interest in political news (it usually makes me mad, but I'm still interested), I am undecided on the immigration issue and I DID vote last election and always do.

I've been playing around with the questionnaire, just clicking randomly. If you skip many questions (more than half), you will be labeled "Bystander," regardless of what you did select. Makes sense.

If you skip several questions, you will be labeled "Disaffected," regardless of what you did select.

I ran the quiz several times answering "Strongly Agree" to all the questions (selecting left or right column randomly), and I was labeled an "Upbeat" every time. Weird. The questions appear to be re-ordered every time the quiz is refreshed, so it may have just been a fluke.

A few false dichotomies there.
No, a lot of false dichotomies, fallacies of the excluded middle, and one whose name I don't know off the top of my head. I had a problem with almost every question.

Oh, I was an Enterpriser.

I took it again and gave what I thought were tree-hugger bleeding-heart answers, and not surprisingly, turned out to be a Liberal. Some interesting commentary about Liberals (underlined bold italics mine):

Liberals represent 17 percent of the American public, and 19 percent of registered voters.
Basic Description
This group has nearly doubled in proportion since 1999, Liberals now comprise the largest share of Democrats and is the single largest of the nine Typology groups.
Interesting. While the liberal left loves to paint the Republicans as a bunch of monolithic Bible-beating warmongers, it's actually the Democrats who are more in lockstep with each other. republicans would appear to be more fragmented.

Who They Are
Most (62%) identify themselves as liberal. Predominantly white (83%), most highly educated group (49% have a college degree or more), and youngest group after Bystanders. Least religious group in typology: 43% report they seldom or never attend religious services; nearly a quarter (22%) are seculars. More than one-third never married (36%).
Well, hell, who wants to live with dirty smelly hippies anyway? [Cartman]Kick 'em in the nuts...[/Cartman]:duck:

Lifestyle Notes
Largest group to have been born (or whose parents were born) outside of the U.S. or Canada (20%). Least likely to report having a gun at home (23%)
In the US, nearly one out of four liberals, people you'd think most in favor of gun control, have a gun at home.

Seems to me I recall Cain claiming, in the last few days, that gun control in the US can never pass because the gun nuts, while a minority, are dedicated voters. This would seem to put the lie to the claim that people who want to protect their gun rights are a minority.

hmpfh!

I too, am an Enterpriser. Beam me up

I was hoping for something more, uh, unusual. :D

Not really. It is just that breaking the "liberals" up into their component groups would result in rather a lot of groups so it is less effort to bodge them all together into a single group.

Government is almost always wasteful and inefficient vs Government often does a better job than people give it credit for

This is a glaring example of one of those false dichotomy thingies.

Lots of false dichotomy questions, but it came up with me as Liberal, which seems reasonable.

As a nitpick, you are making the same fallacy of false dichotomy as the test. The claim of 25% of Liberals owning a gun doesn't specify what kind of gun they have.

I suspect only a very few Liberals want Dick Cheney face shooting guns controlled; its the street sweeping police armor peircing variety that gets them excited. The more-Liberal-than-Ted-Kennedy candidate for president proudly went bird hunting before the election.

To me that would be kind of like saying 95% of Liberals have a Bible in thier house, so they must prove that a vast majority of Liberals are actually against gay marriage!
