What's your problem with Glenn Beck?

I've been going through my deconversion from Christianity for the last few months, and up until now, I've been a vehement supporter of Glenn Beck, alll but believing everything he said to be good and true because, as far as i could tell, he was a good, honest man, and intelligent man. Now, understanding that he is a mormon and knowing what a mormon believes, I'm astonished that any intelligent person could believe anything the LDS church teaches. So now I have to reform my opinion of Beck from a skeptic's point of view, something I'm really struggling with still (thinking isn't something christianity teaches).

So I was hoping i could hear from the skeptics here at jref. Do you dislike Beck? Why? Do you think he is an honest man, intelligent, but compartmentalizes his beliefs. Or is he an intelligent man but dishonest and merely another scumbag tricking the laypeople of America into giving him their money?(obviously those aren't the only options to describe beck).

I'm posting this in the politics forum because I'm concerned mainly with his political views. I don't take anything he says about life, what America should stand for, all the bring god back to the white house crap to heart. I'm more interested in what he says about Washington and the men and women who lead our country. So thanks in advance! And please, whatever your opinion, if you have some sources quick at hand, please post those as well! Thanks!

Beck's spouting of crap conspiracy theories was the first thing that made me write him off, and then his totally bizarre view of history (Teddy Roosevelt was a Commie) just confirmed it. (And, yes, the two are related.)
And his cheap high school drama level theatrics....and, finally, his forcing his religion in our faces.
And of course, the suspicion that in the end, he is just in it for the money.
Yeah, I don't care very much for Glenn Beck.

I think he is an entertainer who knows how to manipulate those who think like you used to think. A special brand of con artist.

Congratulations on breaking away and Welcome. It takes courage to admit you were taken in. The same courage that allows one to learn and grow.

How do fake tears for a photoshoot suggest that he's a con man? Are you suggesting that he also uses vicks on his show?

Well, there's your first mistake: him being a "good, honest man, and intelligent man" shouldn't make you believe everything he says because good, honest, and intelligent men can still be wrong.

Sure, the LDS teachings include a lot of pretty ridiculous stuff. On the other hand...

I am suggesting he will use fake tears to sell you something.

Then you picked a bad example. That's Beck making fun of himself. Whatever else the man may be, he's self-depricating, and that shoot is a perfect example.

A better example is Beck's apocalyptic fear-mongering which is then supplanted by gold advocation:

My biggest problem with Beck is that he has directly admitted that he doesn't know much about history and may very well not know what he's talking about; and then, he continues to spread fear on his show. He knows his rhetoric is hypothetical and unproven, but it makes him famous and rich.

I'm convinced a lot of his stuff is just an act and he knows he can use it to manipulate a certain segment if society. Of course, then he starts spouting the Mormon stuff (Native Americans came from lost tribes of Israel etc.)

Keep in mind too that Beck is an entertainment/publishing company called Mercury Radio Arts. It has a staff of a couple dozen, as well as writers (his sidekick Stu, on his radio show, is actually his head writer for the show).

So another issue I have, is that the Beck persona is very much a construct. How much Beck believes in it, I don't know.

Actulally vicks to make tears is an old, old, old, actors trick, used by everybody from High School Drama Classes to Ten Million Buck a film stars.

That is another thing I hate about Beck:The way he compares himself with Orson Welles.

Beck equals Lonsome Rhodes in "A Face In the Crowd". IF you have not seen this film,do so at once.

Oh so many reasons. My main one is how he practically worships the Founding Fathers, and says that Character is of primary importance.

Um, one of the saintly guys you painted had fun raping his slave. Great Character, or greatest Character?

Mostly, he annoys me because he is in the *make funny face and joke* school of rebuttal. Which is very dull if you aren't a member of the choir.

Also, the whole "God crafted the US, and socialists have perverted it" thing. 'Nuff said.

His new catch phrase is that Obama is for Liberation Theology, or code for "he may be Christian, but he's a commie too!"

It seems that Beck gives the Founding Fathers a pass for having little to no respect for women or anyone who wasn't a white, male person of high regard. Actually.. maybe that's exactly why he likes them so much?
