I love this:

"Kid can't go to Catholic school because his name is Hell"
theage.com.au/news/national/church-says-no-to-hell/2007/07/09/1183833410199.html

Best of all is that his name comes about because his grand(etc)father was from Austria, where they speak German, and the latin letters H-E-L-L in that order mean "clear" or "bright". But obviously it wouldn't occur to the people who run the school to check with anyone who speaks German. Presumably their boss's boss's boss's boss's boss's boss could give them a clue:

So now we know that Hellboy was a Bright.

Welcom, Nick. Is your brother named Gotcha?

DR

If true, this is surprising. If the Sin kid can grow up to be a cardinal, the Hell kid should have no problem attending a Catholic school.

Damn! Had I been planning ahead, I would have chosen different names for my children.

I guess they just didn't want all Hell to break loose. You can't have people raising Hell in the church.

I'm not sure if I made it clear (the board won't let me post clickable links as a newbie) that Hell is the family surname. In other words the school and the priest are after the kid because of something his parents couldn't do anything about. It's not like they name him Hell (cool though that would have been).

I have a friend named Sin. Her 6 yr old brother was allowed to name her (and spell it out) at the hospital, so her legal name is Sin De (last name). She went to an all-girl Catholic private school here in Houston where the nuns renamed her "Cindy".

Sin is quite a character, no doubt...

I don't see what the fuss is about. The surname started somewhere and as the good book says,"the sins of the fathers shall be visited upon the sons". You just need a bit of that old Catholic logic.
(Too lazy to think of a go to Hell joke)

Nick? You got your own account here? Get back in your cage. Immediately.

As to names, it could be worse. I actually know someone named Latrina.
