What's deepnet explorer like?

I heard of Deepnet Explorer a few months ago, and it sounded like an application that used Internet Explorer as its underlying code. After doing some online searching, my suspicions seemed to be confirmed.

Both the iRider and Deepnet browsers are nothing but small applications that house the Internet Explorer browser engine, meaning that both are prone to the majority of the exploits that the real IE is. While I agree, as far as usability goes, that these are far better than the real IE, to suggest security as a reason to use one of these browsers is ridiculous.

Deepnet Explorer--a browser shell that relies on the Internet Explorer engine--last month launched its own antiphishing browser.

...Deepnet Technologies has launched a new browser that super charges IE with a collection of useful features.

Deepnet Technologies Ltd. of the U.K., for example, offers a free browser based on IE, but with additional features, including one designed to protect against phishing scams.

So, I sent Deepnet Technologies Marketing Director Anneli Ritari an email:

"It sounds like DE is similar to MyIE2, in that both have Internet Explorer at their core. Is that true? What connection is there between DE and IE? I ask this because I'm highly concerned about security problems that have become evident in the IE browser produced by Microsoft. I have resolved not to use IE or any browser using IE as
its core application."

To which she responded: "Yes, Deepnet Explorer is built on the 'IE html engine'."

I never ended up installing the program.

Yes that sounds about right. It's just like IE except with additional features. I don't like other browsers apart from IE because they simply don't work with loads of web pages, so I keep having to switch browsers all the time. Eventually I always end up with just using IE by itself. I haven't had sufficient experience with this deepnet explorer yet to see if it suffers these disadvantages. So far so good though.

Mind you I've just downloaded this sp2 which is really pi**ing me off. Half the time I can't get downloads and I keep getting this windows update nagging me which I can't seem to simply switch off!

Surely now you're just trolling?

I've come across a few sites that don't work well with other browsers than IE. So be it. Those sites may be non-standards-compliant, and I can bleat about standards all I want. The fact has always been that IE was by far and away (I believe over 90%) the dominant browser. Times change, and, last I looked, and aware that any browser survey is subject to some distortion, IE was pulling about 70%. Still, obviously, a majority. But if you want to design a website for all, don't design it with document.all.

Half the time you can't get downloads? You mean that when a site tries to install a plugin automatically, you now get a warning first? And this is a bad thing?

And the Windows Update thing is trying to tell you that there are updates to Windows available that would make your machine more secure. You can certainly switch that off, no problem (Control Panel/Security Centre), but you'd be a moron to do that rather than just download the updates in question. And before anyone complains, I've had two critical updates announce themselves in Firefox recently as well. I dutifully downloaded them and installed them.

Cheers,
Rat.

I have come across more than just a few webpages that doesnt work unless you use IE, and it sucks. I have to decide how much I trust them and most of the time add them to the trusted list so their fancy features works.

And not installing windows updates is like screaming "Hello mister hacker, please come and violate my computer. You can use it to send spam or store child porn on it. I don't care"
Bit of an exaggeration I know but you get the general idea.

Here's a "feature" of DE that you might want to be aware of:
From the EULA:
5. SHARED FOLDER & ULTRA PEER

When you download files using the Peer-to-Peer function of this Software your download folder is set by default to be shared with other users. You can disable this sharing in the Peer-to-Peer function by going to Tools/P2P Browser Options/Shared Files and then un-clicking the box titled "Share Downloaded Files".

Your copy of the Software may serve as an ultra peer. The selection process is automated. When your computer is an ultra peer other users will upload an index of files they are sharing to your computer and they will send search queries to your computer. Your computer will reply to these requests and also forward the request to other ultra peers. If you do not want to serve as an ultra peer you can disable this function by going to Tools/P2P Browser Options/Network and then change your node type to "leaf peer" in the Advanced Options.
