Teacher won't shave until bin Laden caught

POSTED: 8:19 a.m. EDT, September 13, 2006

EPHRATA, Washington (AP) -- After the September 11 terrorist attacks, Gary Weddle followed the news so closely he forgot to shave. After a week he decided not to shave until Osama bin Laden was caught or killed.

Nor has Weddle, 46, who expected the al Qaeda leader to be caught within a month or so, trimmed his facial hair in the succeeding five years as he went from substitute teacher to science instructor at Ephrata Middle School.

At the start of each school year he gives students a brief explanation of his beard, which stretches more than a foot and has started turning gray.

"I still get emotional over the families who lost loved ones. I just don't feel there's any closure on this until they get that guy," Weddle told The Wenatchee World for an article published Monday. "I don't have to know anyone personally who lost family in 9/11 to understand the devastation that he's responsible for."

His wife, Donita, hates the beard, but their three daughters, who attend high school in East Wenatchee, don't mind and "mostly their boyfriends think it's cool," Weddle said.

He said he would keep the beard, untrimmed, as long as bin Laden remains at large -- "even if I get buried with it."

The bad news is . . . he'll probably die with his beard.

The good news is . . . he'll probably die of old age.

Now if he'd only wear one of those dinky little white pill-box hats he could pass for muslim

:) I thought of that too - as a matter of fact, before this is all over he's going to resemble Bin Laden quite a bit.

What are YOU doing to support the war on terror?

I am generally boycotting the air travel. Have done so since Sept 20, 2001, when the immediate reaction to 9-11 became obvious: the slashing of payroll by major airlines.

Of course, when my work requires a ticket, paid for by the boss, to travel, I go. And I admit one trip to Virginia (about 1800 miles) last summer.

Otherwise, all of the airlines, save Southwest who didn't let anyone go then, can eat my shorts.

I'm giving up rutabagas until bin Laden is either killed, captured, or gets his own reality TV show.

I knew I could count on your support, Shemp. :)

I've personally given up going to church AND okra until OBL is killed or captured.

I hereby swear to never again partake in the sweet, sweet joy that is Pac-Man until Bin Laden is brought to justice.

Ms. Pac-Man is, of course, an entirely different game.

I plan on buying a couple of those trite magnetic cum-ribbon-shape "Support the Troops" thingys and stick them on my truck.

Charlie (that'll teach the terrorists!) Monoxide

I'm going to buy one of these!

The silver is from ground zero. Really! It is!

It's true. :)

So by simple logic I presume you would support a decision to enter Pakistan with the intent of capturing OBL? That seems in conflict with your other post that cryptically equates such an action to imperialism.

If the other thread is correct, then I can only conclude that you have no overriding interest in seeing OBL apprehended or killed.

If I've misunderstood these two positions, please enlighten me.

What "simple logic" led you to this conclusion? Not the conflict, but what you're saying you presume.

Please enlighten me.

1. Bad news and long beard yields by modest deduction "Mehpisto considers capture/killing of OBL = good."

2. CW has OBL in Pakistan.

3. Deduction: "go to Pakistan to get OBL = good" This position is at odds with the negative thread Meph posted about Pakistan's border, Bush, and OBL apprehension vis a vis Pakistani sovereignty and "Imperialism."

Rational progression. Even I got it. I also sensed mild sarcasm in the Jocko post.

What is the other thread and/or what did Mephisto say in this regard?

Wasn't he taking issue with the U.S. military entering Pakistan without its government's permission to capture OBL? What you seem to be doing is:

1. Bad news and long beard yields by modest deduction "Mehpisto considers capture/killing of OBL = good."

2. In other post, Mephisto considers U.S. military entry into Pakistan for purposes of capturing OBL without its government's permission = going to Pakistan to capture OBL = bad

3. Deduction: his positions are at odds.

Just because he objects to the U.S. military's unauthorized entry into Pakistan doesn't mean that he objects to OBL's capture all together. If I have misunderstood Mephisto's position, then I understand your apparent incredulity at my inability to appreciate Jocko's simple logic (and evidently his sarcasm, too).

Mild sarcasm? I must be losing my edge. ;)
