I went to a Howrd Dean houseparty last night in Orlando and it was pretty cool. At first a little dead, but as ti got later the real political dicussions started to pick up and I was impressed by what some people had to say. Interestingly the most local and interested people were women, it was basically me and another guy talking to about 4 or 5 women about geopolitics and economics.

The guy that hosted the party was the former COO of Jenson electronics. He had some interesting insights one international trade and economics as he has dealt extensively with business in Asia. We basically all agreed that our economic system is dependant on disparity, and that the only real thing we have done over the past 100 years is push the disparity out of our own country so much and onto the rest of the world. But we all agreed that without that disparity the US position would not be as strong; its a hard issue to tackle.

Being in Florida we had plenty to say about Jeb Bush too. One of the guy's wife is a property appraiser that used to work for the state back tine 80s. And he was talking about how when Bush came in the changed that were made in terms of property appraisal, and I brought up the S&L crisis and how Jeb bought a piece of property for $4,500,000 defaulted on the loan, then when the S&L was closed the property was reappraised at $500,000 which Jeb paid. Tax payers were stuck with the $4 million.

Of course Jeb is also pushing to increase prison funding and make the 12th grade volentary in Florida. Florida and Texas have the 2nd and 3rd most regressive state taxes in the country.

Mostly though we talked about economics and I was impressed with the quality of the conversation, so it was interesting.

Oh, and Dr. Dean got on the phone, speaker phone, with everyone in Florida and Georgia (this was a coordinated event) and talked and took questions and anwsers. He did dodge one question about immigrants and minorites. The question was about what his thought were on higly skilled foriegn immigrants who are taking American jobs, but it was posed by a guy that sounded obviously Indian. He just changed the subject and talked about the importance of getting minorities invovled in politics.

Did you scare them by revealing that you are a Marxist, Malachi? :p

Thanks for the account, for us, the non-americans your posts have a special interest.

Thank you for informing on these unamericans. The committee thanks you.

HA! I live in NEw Hampshire and I meet Dean a LOT! In fact soon, I'll be having to shake their hands when I go grocery shopping, there will be no escaping them or they truly annoying ads which have started playing over and over and over...

Edwards brags about how no one in his family has gone to college (until him) and he used to pick cotton or something...his accent is a little thick.

Dean is into health care, he's a doctor. He thinks we would gladly give up the tax cut if we could all have decent insurance. THat's reasonable.

The best part is late night tv when the poorer stranger guys buy time. I wonder if California is going through this. At least they have some professional actors that hopefully will make better ads.

Pool BOy still brags about the time he almost ran over Tom Harkin. He was splayed over out hood, his face pressed to our windshield. If I had belonged to JREF and knew about his support of alternative medicine, I would have told Pool Boy , "floor it!"

I went to a garden party.

Why you ask? To reminisce with my old friends. A chance to share old memories and play our old songs again.

But.....When I got to the garden party, they all knew my name, But no one recognized me, I didn't look the same. :(

But it's all right now. I learned my lesson well. You see, you can't please everyone, so you got to please yourself!!

This is a cool idea. I think I'll go to one of these Dean meetups. I'll feed people bait on the Carlysle group and other kook topics and try to see if my theory about his rabid support base is true.

Hey malichi, did you get some pussy?

If not, im dissapointed. ;)

There's a lot to like about Dean's policies on social issues. But his foreign and economic policies will do him in. When it's all said and done, he'll be an also-ran. He'll do better than Braun and Sharpton though.

I wonder if I should offer to hold a "house party" for Sharpton?

Would go down well in New Hampshire...

Probably the food and music would be better than a Dean get together though...
