Well-known Politician says America Becoming Nativist, speaks of Xenophobia

Former U.S. President George W. Bush said recently that he was concerned that the country was headed down a slippery slope toward adopting a "nativist" national mindset, harkening back to a period of xenophobia that he said was prominent in the America of the 1920s.

W was hardly a nativist, and not an isolationist. Indeed, there are plenty of people across the ponds from us, and numerous libertarians in this country, who'd rather he'd been more nativist in his policies, and less interested in matters over sea. (outre mer?)

GW Bush had lots of failings, but xenophobia was not among them. When he was governor of Texas, he had a lot of support from the Hispanic community (especially since he spoke passable Spanish) and he was not one of the ones who pushed draconian border guards and such. Neither did he seem particularly anti-Islam, though he was so ignorant of Islam and Middle-East politics in general that he wound up being their favorite effigy for burning anyway.

But I think he truly did see (if not understand completely) the dangers that a xenophobic mindset pose for our society.

They are making snowmen in Hell today. :D I think Molly Ivins would slap you, were she alive today.

I do believe that South Texas has had some snow today.

But I think Molly had a soft spot for Dubya too. She regarded him as a political incompetent who achieved his positions solely because of his family connections, and in that I pretty much agree with her. But I don't believe she thought of him as an evil person. Just a man who wasn't smart enough to make good decisions, particularly about those people he chose as advisors.

100 years from now, when historians look back on the thriving Middle-Eastern democracies of the time, they'll trace it back to GWB's actions in Iraq being a catalyst for it.

Heck, half of the country at the time hated Lincoln and his views and actions were so repugnant to some that he was assassinated for them.

Just when I finish telling you in another thread that your jokes aren't funny, you prove me wrong with this howler! Comparing W to Lincoln? Wow.
And any democracies in the Middle East historians look back on in 100 years they will probably credit the internet for.

I merely gave you an example of a President who was very unpopular in his time...who oversaw a War which killed hundreds of thousands of Americans, who suspended Habeas Corpus and was so hated, he was assassinated.

Isn't it interesting how the beauty of hindsight allows us to see the actions of Lincoln differently than how they were viewed by many at the time.

Or you could always say that Jeff Davis was the 'President' who "oversaw a war which killed hundreds of thousands of Americans".
Another thing Abe and W have in common is enriching the language so much.
Lincoln with his fine series of debates, The Gettysburg Address, etc.
Bush with Bushisms and Bushisms Vol.2.

Lucky for Lincoln he didn't have a biased media machine recording his every utterance!

I would post a video of Obamaisms...his gaffes, misspeaks, and numerous ums...but I won't.

South of I-10 a number of people just realized that you can't put salt/sand on the bridge before the rain, that will freeze on the cold bridge, falls on the bridge ... without the salt/sand getting washed off by said rain.

You can't make this crap up.

In other news, Agua Dulce lost electrical power. Ouch, on one of the coldest days in recent memory.

As to Molly ... well, she's dead, I'll let that thought head west.
