Webcast Suspension

On the webcast of August 21, Mr. Randi mentioned that the Thursday night webcasts are being suspended. I'm afraid I wasn't able to hear the whole story, because I kept "losing" the webcast.

Can anyone provide a summary of the reasons behind suspension of the webcasts?

As I understand it, it's partly due to Mr Randi's following his physician's advice to take a bit more time off. Something about burning the candle at both ends, working 7 days a week, that sort of thing. Well hell, the man's no spring chicken, but he does make it perfectly clear that there is no underlying physical condition that we need to panic about.

I for one will miss those Thursday shows. They made the night shift here at the computer help desk bearable. And of course, I did get my smiling face on one show that's ensconced on my outboard USB hard drive...

Mr Randi, Andrew, Jack, Ken, all those over time who masqueraded as "The Arm", and everyone else associated with bringing us our weekly audio/video dose of rationality...

Thank you. Your efforts are greatly appreciated.

I heard that the webcast will be suspended for two months. The reason is something related to Randi's health, but I'm not clear about the details. All I heard for sure, from his own words, is that he was at the hospital for what it was firstly supposed to be a heart problem. After the medical checking, the heart condition was ruled out, to conclude it was a food poisoning problem.

On closing the webcast he assured he was OK, and that Sylvia's prediction will not come true. Let's hope.

Is a webcast all that demanding? I've got a 77 year old co-worker who is a dynamo. I couldn't see sitting around reading e-mails for an hour or so being all that demanding.

I don't know. You missed the paltalk gathering, just for that trivial matter of "being at work". Hal said that Randi was at office 7 days a week, 14 hours each. He also said that after coming out of the hosp, he had to take care of 500+ pending emails. I can only guess that the webcast was to be sacrified so that he could put his health and other things in order

Ugh, I can see why it might be the proverbial straw on the camel's back. On the other hand, I've always been of the opinion that if you're to busy... stop doing some things. The man shouldn't be putting in those kinds of hours.

Seconded. I will miss the webcasts. Thanks to all who helped made them work.

I'm going to ask a question many people must have asked themselves.

James Randi is not a young man. Sooner or later he will have to quit, for whatever reason. We all hope that's a long way off, but the fact remains.

JREF is largely a one man show. So what happens then?

Is there a plan for an orderly hand over of power? Is there an "heir apparent"? Does the $1m in trust revert to donors?

Does JREF schism (THe New, Enlightened Randians, versus The Bright Post Randis, feuding over the cash???)

Worst case scenario- JR is kidnapped by telepathic aliens tomorrow and hauled off to Alpha Centauri in a magnetic perpetual motion powered UFO. Does JREF shut down , or does the ongoing mission...on go?

In that scenario the aliens would get the cash.

As I understand it, Randi had Andrew in mind for a time, but no longer.

I will also miss the broadcast. Randi is a natural, Jack is a fount of information, and Andrew is -- well, he's culturally literate!

Randi made a very good point. He said that if he were to come into the office for 2 hours Thursday night, it would be better applied to other concerns than chatting online. C'est le randi!

John Clavis

P.S. Off to Burning Man!

These are some speculations, but perhaps Swiss, Banachek, Polidoro, or Shermer.

Volume of work and available time has interfered with the webcast. I just can't work it into an overly-busy schedule.

We expect to resume again in a couple of months.....

Amazing! Randi has just made his 21st post and I am poster number 21! Coincidence or what?

Everybody needs a chance to stop and smell the diesel fumes once and awhile...I'd rather you took a break temporarily rather than permanently.

And once again, thank you for the webcast in particular, and your work in general. What I've learned through the JREF has helped me in situations personal, professional, intellectual, and emotional, some for the good and some yet to be determined.

Damn, this place is fun...:D
