While I'm not fond of the idea, let's be honest...The chances of preventing the militarization of space are about the same as total abolition of nuclear weapons. Not gonna happen in my lifetime.

Your poll question is a joke. "Bans" amount to nothing more than feel-good measures designed to placate the gullible while the North Koreas, Irans and Libyas of the world develop weapons programs as complex as their infrastructure will allow... bans or no bans.

Therefore, a ban is a silly idea, as it will only be signed by countries who wouldn't abuse the privilege in the first place. Look at the NPT if you need an example of how effective such measures are.

"Russia's position on this question has not changed for decades: We are categorically against the militarization of space," the Interfax news agency quoted Ivanov as saying during a visit to the Baikonur space facility in Kazakhstan.

Yeah, they're not putting weapons into orbit on principle. Has nothing at all to do with a corrupt, collapsing economy, ongoing brain drain to the west and international pressure mounting on top of internal pressure to reform.

Not that any of those things would prevent them from launching spaceborne weapons, which of course, they wouldn't.

By the way, Jay, I'm categorically opposed to winning the lottery, learning to fly like Superman and banging Kim Cattral up the *ss. Ain't I principled?

Fine and dandy, but how does this get me any closer to banging Kim Cattral in the *ss?

Oh, I get it. The only reason anyone would oppose putting nuclear bombs in space is if they couldn't.

I disagree.

Dammit. Crossed wires. I meant to vote yes. I blame the someone who placed "contradictory" questions in the topic and poll.
There should be a ban on weapons in space. Putting weapons in space is an obviously offensive and threatening act to every nation on the earth. < argument mode=fallacy-ridden >Kind of surprises me that the "we need guns so we can fight back if the government gets oppresive"-crowd approves.< /argument > :D

If you ban weapons in space, only evil criminal masterminds will have weapons in space.

No, that's the only reason the RUSSIANS would oppose it. You really have issues with overextrapolation, don't you?

I don't want my tax dollars wasted on such a boondoggle.

Mars is essentially in the same orbit...Mars is somewhat the same distance from the Sun, which is very important. We have seen pictures where there are canals, we believe, and water. If there is water, that means there is oxygen. Where there is oxygen, we can launch Tomahawk cruise missiles with the Williams International F107 Cruise Turbo-Fan Engine and ARC/CSD Solid-Fuel Booster. Take out those slave bases on the other side of the moon. Fight for democracy.

Weapons in space, we have no weapons in space....maybe just one or two...
