Clearly there was a scheduling conflict with his spirit guides.

He does have a good out though, saying "[...] in some cases, spirit guides can actually be negative entities themselves". So there, his guides decided to cause even more death that day, hence why it was one of the bloodiest days. See, it works!

Ah, but the Spirit of Death wasn't there. He took a trip to Vegas, played on the fruit machines and everything. Really enjoyed himself, apparently.
