The rebels have got as far as the capital

Heavy fighting has subsided in Chad's capital after breaking out at dawn, between government troops and rebels trying to overthrow the president.

But are they sudan backed? Probably

What will the french do? Well they have already opened fire.

Weapons appear to be a mixture of AKs and RPGs with a little armour perhaps taken from Libya.

I don't off hand know what either side thinks of israel.

NPR's The World had a segment on this situation tonight in some depth. The rebels are indeed (according to the article) backed by Sudan, but evidently represent a genuine Chadian revolution. The president, who took power himself in a coup, has been backed by the French. (Chad is previously a French colony)

There were conflicting reports from the capital; the rebels claim to be in the city and closing on the capitol building, the Chadian government claims that the rebels have been repulsed, and the firing heard in the city is soldiers "firing into the air for joy."

The situation in the area is becoming increasingly problematic, with the UN twiddling it's collective fingers for two years after Genocide was declared by our own state department. Some UN Security Council members are invested in Sudan for oil and gas (notably China) and threaten to veto any meaningful sanctions.
The conflict could easily erupt beyond the borders of these countries, causing a huge humanitarian tragedy.

Such puny battles won't stop the thumb-twiddling in the UN, no sir!

A little over 20 years ago Muhumar Khadaffi (or however one spells his name) was making inroads into Northern Chad, where there are uranium ores.

With a renewed interest in Nuclear Power in some places, this raises an interesting prospect of foreign intervention, be it solely French or UN, given the latest uranium based issues in the news of the past year.
