Bond Measure 23 increases the property tax by $0.20 per thousand dollars of assessed property value in order to pay for the bonds to build a new school to replace Oak Hill Elementary school. Oak Hill Elementary school was built in 1961 and has numerous problems including roof leaks, asbestos insulation and faulty boilers for heating. The replacement school will be constructed to enable modern technology including high speed internet connections, metal detectors and an improved fire prevention system.
I am sure that on your ballot, you have a similar bond measure (or maybe it’s a sales tax increase.) Perhaps it is for a library or a fire station or some necessary road construction. Just vote no. Should you have a new school? Of course but that is not the point.
The point is priorities. Your city could build a new school without raising taxes, if it made schools a priority. In my city, we are spending millions of dollars to build low income housing. Is their a bond measure for this? Of course not because no one would vote for it. The city councilors put schools on the ballot because it is the most likely bond measure to be passed. Instead of giving us a choice to fund the least important item, they are giving us a choice to fund the most important.
Vote no. Force your local politician to actually decide on priorities.
