I was/am not a supporter of the war and believe that the US is in for a long, costly haul in Iraq.

However, it is interesting that Jon would use the word "gestapo" considering the mass graves and evident murder and torture of thousands (if not hundreds of thousands) that occured under Saddam.

I fear for the US because it is a terrible thing to be an occupier in an essentially hostile land. However, what Jon puts forth as "proof" of US "gestapo" tactics would have been laughed at by both Saddam and the real "gestopo" -- an organization that wouldn't have bothered with a messy search that "trashed" innocent peoples homes, they would have (like Saddam) just taken the whole village out and shot them.

My point is -- the US will make mistakes. It will violate human rights and the rights it claims to have gone to Iraq to protect. However, US actions are, to date, so far and away different than "gestapo" tactics as to be a ridiculous analogy.

Hitler, the sponsor of the the real "gestapo" was a great believer in the big lie...comparing US actions (bad and disturbing as they may be) with the gestapo is to indulge in the most slimy of "big lie" tactics.

And, more importantly, to make this comparison with the "proof" offered, minimizes not only the real evil of the "gestapo" but also of Saddam.

The GESTAPO's specialities were information retrieval, i.e. torture and fabrication of facts and the pursuit and elimination of unwanted individuals, i.e. murder. As the name says, they mostly operated in secrecy, e.g. arrests were made at night (just loud enough to terrify the neighbors).
