Va. lawmaker to resign, paving way for jobs for self, daughter, according to associates

RICHMOND — Republicans appear to have outmaneuvered Gov. Terry McAuliffe in a state budget standoff by persuading a Democratic senator to resign his seat, at least temporarily giving the GOP control of the chamber and possibly dooming the governor’s push to expand Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act.

Sen. Phillip P. Puckett (D-Russell) will announce his resignation Monday, effective immediately, paving the way to appoint his daughter to a judgeship and Puckett to the job of deputy director of the state tobacco commission, three people familiar with the plan said Sunday. They spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the matter.

Is this legal? It stinks to high heaven.

After the legislature concluded its regular session in February, the judges reappointed Ketron to serve until the legislature reconvenes. If Puckett resigns, the legislature plans to appoint her to a full six-year term. “It should pave the way for his daughter,” Kilgore said of Puckett’s resignation. “She’s a good judge. . . . I would say that he wanted to make sure his daughter kept her judgeship. A father’s going do that.”

The important thing is to make sure that poor people don't get medical coverage. That glorious end justifies any means!

You say that like "doctors" and "health care" are a good thing.

This whole "problem" is so simple. People just have to stop getting sick. It's that easy, folks.

Illness- some lazy good for nothings will use any excuse to avoid work.

Well if the poor would just hurry up and die off it'd be a better world for everyone, less people voting Democrat for a start!

What a legacy this dipstick is leaving. When he got caught out in the cushy job, he backed off and will keep his job as a landscaper in banking (poor baby). So he doesn't get the big carrot, he betrayed his constituency (check out his district!) and all he achieved was getting his daughter (maybe) slotted into a permanent judgeship rather than temporary. The law in VA is that she couldn't be confirmed as a permanent position while her father was an elected representative.

So, what's good for me and my family has to come first! Forget the people of the State, I'm getting mine while the getting is good.

Politicians suck.

There has been a report that the FBI is looking into this. I would love to see the traitor false Democrat under a jail and his daughter lose the judgeship - and anyone proven to be involved in making the deal with him under that jail!!!!

So, if you flaunt your corruption publicly enough, I guess that makes it okay?

If there is a god, Puckett will resign, his daughter won't get her permanent appointment and he won't get the tobacco commissioner job. But alas, there is no god.

Puckett has withdrawn his name for consideration for the tobacco comission job.

In the wake of a “firestorm of criticism regarding his resignation from the Virginia Senate,” Puckett withdrew his name from consideration for the tobacco commission job. The fact that Puckett will not take this job, however, will not necessarily save him from prosecution if he did, in fact, agree to trade his seat in the state senate for a new role with the tobacco commission before this firestorm arose. Virginia’s bribery law provides that anyone who “accepts or agrees to accept” a bribe in return for an “exercise of discretion as a public servant” is guilty of a felony, so Puckett could have committed the crime of bribery if and when he agreed to deal away his senate seat — regardless of whether he later decided not to take the prize that he was offered.

As they had hoped to do the Republicans in the VA Senate were able to pass a budget plan that would not expand Medicaid. Hooray more poor people without health care. Nıce work everyone!

Virginia Republicans snatched control of the state Senate on Monday, immediately ending a budget stalemate by pushing Democrats to agree to pass a spending plan without Medicaid expansion, Gov. Terry McAuliffe’s top priority.

The power shift forced Senate Democrats to yield after a protracted standoff that had threatened to shut down state government in less than a month, according to several lawmakers with direct knowledge of the deal. Democratic negotiators agreed in a closed-door meeting Monday to pass a budget without expanding health coverage to 400,000 low-income Virginians.
