One of the Chicago Tribune's columnists, Eric Zorn, wrote this in his weblog here:

"Those who cite “faith†for the reason they believe that God himself creates these exceedingly poor likenesses on unusual canvases throughout the world erode the dignity and nobility of the term “faith.†If it means you’ll believe absolutely any wacky notion or farfetched idea that supports your religious outlook, it loses its ability to command respect."
I find that to be a nice statement.
