Slashdot reports this morning that the Utah state assembly has passed a resolution (with no legal power) decrying global warming and demanding that the Environmental Protection Agency cease it's efforts to regulate CO2 and such until such time as the phenomenon can be "proved".

Well damn! It's snowing here today. If only we hadn't outlawed global warming we could've had a really sunny day.

Oh well, in a few decades when all the rest of the world is baking in their global warming, we here in Utah will be just fine.

Indiana once voted that pi was exactly 3.
Good thing the nature and value of pi is a mathematical certainty, boasting a tiny handful of easily-controlled variables and an assortment of trivial mathematical and geometrical proofs.

Same thing with anthropogenic global warming.

Oh, wait...

So if the evidence were more complex like say Evolution it would be ok for politicians to try and outlaw science?

Snopes says that's not true here.

Wikipedia has a good explanation of what actually happened here. Basically a math crank convinced the 1897 Indiana House of Representatives to pass a bill using his "solution" to squaring a circle (which included an example of a "circle" with a circumfrance-to-diameter ratio of 3.2). Before the Senate could pass it, though, a Purdue professor there on unrelated business heard about it and got it stopped.
