Earlier today I was thinking of some things I learned in the past about fractals. I did some searches, and came across this pdf file about using fractals in soil science that I thought was interesting. The article is about 5 or so years old.

I was wondering what other uses of fractals people have encountered and found interesting.

Interesting article. I've long been fascinated by fractals from a purely aesthetic perspective and have written a number of programs to generate fractal images (you can see some of them at my web page). But I've never really been entirely clear as to how fractal geometry could be applied to pratical real world problems.

I found a paper in the somewhat obscure journal Experimental Oncology that used "fractal parameters" to represent molecular structures. These were used to construct Structure-Activity Relationships for predicting the anti-cancer activity of some macrocyclic pyridinophanes. Unfortunately, the method is described in slightly vague terms and I haven't followed the references back to the even more obscure Dopovidi NAN Ukraini. I'm sure it's a real page-turner, though.

Fractals have been used in geomorphology to analyze landforms; I haven't really followed the details. I think also for analyzing rock fractures, particularly for fractured-rock hydrology.
