I heard this from the local NPR station. It isn't mentioned in the article, but the radio blurb had a catholic priest who told a great one-liner (that he credited to Galileo), "Scripture tells us how to go to heaven, not how the heavens go."

eta: woot. Here it is.

The quip was actually made by a cardinal of the RCC and quoted by Galileo, which, if anything, adds strength to the point.

I went to catholic school. They taught us evolution. They got around the whole "created in 7 days" thing by saying the 7 days were not literal. Which makes sense. Earth wasnt created until like day 2. How can you measure a "day" before the Earth was even created.

The article about the Pope's own science advisor taking a stance against teaching ID in schools was a welcome sight. I would very much like to see the opponents of Inteligent Design use this as ammunition the next time this topic comes up for a vote at the next school that tries to sneak it into their curriculum.

For protestant anti-evolutionaries, this is somewhere between irrelevant and proof that the pope is the anti-christ. But drop a line to Pat Buchanan to get a Catholic anti-evolution response to this fact.
