President Barack Obama Thursday signalled a pivotal American shift to Asia, pledging he would not let Washington's budget crunch compromise his expansive vision and military presence in the region.

His commitment came a day after the United States said it would deploy up to 2,500 Marines to northern Australia

Not sure if this one should be here, or if it'd go better in CTs for them to start panicing over. lol.

I am wondering where these troops are coming from. Possibly relocating from Okinawa?

I did some searching and have not found where the marines are currently based that will be in Australia.

The north east of Australia has a fair amount of coal too.

And, hey, at least we're invading the only country to make it a law that porn stars must have big boobs.

Why not a law that people should watch granny porn, just to get as far away from kiddie porn as possible?

That was the motivation, right?

This actually makes perfect sense.

Once we hit peak oil, the next Important Thing will be rare earths. China is sitting on about a third of the world's proven deposits and a while back they flooded the world market, so producers in the US, Australia, and the Indus region were basically put out of business. But the times they are a'changing. The USGS has been actively researching deposits in Afghanistan and Australia. It's crucial that the US establishes a friendly geopolitical presence in the region.

The Chinese are changing the directions of their nuclear warheads as we speak.

I was about to jump in and say it wouldn't matter because Chinese missiles couldn't reach Australia anyway - this is what was said yesterday on ABC news.

Luckily I did a little research and it turns out they can.

Now, why would an ABC commentator say something like this?

Why so many? Are there even that many Australians?

Pish, you seem to have missed all the recent European legislation to the same effect.

In case people are not aware of the climate in the top end of the Northern Territory, it doesn't drop below 30C even in the middle of winter, and rarely drops below 20C at night. During the wet season, these temperatures are accompanied by 400mms, or 16 inches, of torrential rain. Absolutely horrible climate, and the only part of Australia I have no desire to visit. I pity the soldiers posted there.

I was there during the Buildup a couple of years ago - most unpleasant. I tried to go for a run in the evening and it almost killed me - so humid! The sunsets were spectacular, though.
