Uri geller flogging tat on QVC UK

1879: the light-bulb
1935: the ballpoint pen
1976: the PC
2007: cutlery on a necklace

You know, tat. AKA tut, junk, rubbish, bric-a-brac, cheap trinkets, Geller Droppings (tm).

He's selling tattoos?
Ha! That's what I thought, too.

According to Wikipedia, Tat is "a term, found particularly in England, referring to anything which appears shabby, cheap, and tasteless."

Sorry for the misunderstanding my Transatlantic cousins. Tat is a term, found particularly in England, referring to tasteful, good quality items of excellent value. The perfect gift for any member of your family.
Just how litigious is that Geller bloke?

Hmm, it seems I misread the title. Although I think "Uri Geller flogging on QVC UK" would be much more popular.

Maybe you should ask the mods to replace your thread title with "crud" or "cack"

I find The Queen's "British" English very good at conveying different nuances of naff, especially if one allows Scottish words.

Where would "mince" figure in such a spectrum, in your opinion?

You make my point with a fine example sire.

Another subtly different meaning; I had been thinking about "pish", which a scottish colleague was very fond of using...

Is American English blessed with so many ways of describing different types of "not very good"?

I don't think so. As an arguably more optimistic culture, their range of such words seems somewhat bone. :D

This reminds me of an allegedly true story (though I've not been able to confirm its veracity) of a pub quiz machine somewhere in Britain where the programmer rigged one of the multiple choice quiz questions. Here is the question and the choice of answers:

What is Uri Geller Famous For?

(A) Bending Spoons
(B) Pumping Iron
(C) Being a Twat

What was the right answer to the pub machine question ?

I hope it was "C"....

What has surprised me is that with the exception of the spoon pendants and the dowsing kit , it's all generic stuff that could have graced a branch of Ratners[1] in the 1980's with 9 carat gold trinkets and not even quality cubic zirconia, but what are called "crystals" - which could be sugar for all we know.

I suppose we should be thankful for him not pushing his woo stuff - perhaps it marks a point in his life where he's toning down his "special powers" and trying to concentrate on becoming a D list celebrity.

[1] It'd be great to see Uri Doing a RatnerWP

The quiz machine thing is hilarious, if anecdotal. I remember answering that question one night many years ago on a machine like that, but I don't remember the "twat" answer. I want it to be true though. Here's the original letter and a thread about it.
