Updating a video card driver on Ubuntu

I'm completely lost with this kind of stuff on Linux. I have a machine running Ubuntu 11.10 and it has a Radeon 4200 video card. This card will not run Flash 11 GPU content because I suspect the driver is pre-2009 which Flash 11 won't support. Before buying a new card, I want to make sure it isn't just a matter of updating the driver, but I have no clue how to do this on Ubuntu.

Can anyone walk me through this?

Thanks! So I got the driver installed, after doing some further research, it seems that for sure the Radeon 4200 won't work with Flash 11 GPU mode.
