Updates on "The Faith-Healers"?

I just read "The Faith Healers" and I was wondering if Randi has done any updates on the "healers" he took down in that 1989 book? Or if he even cares at this point? Are there any good archived threads about "The Faith Healers"?

Popoff, it seems, is still at it. His website gave me feelings of déja vu. On his "Donations" page we read:

Praise God! We thank you for your financial support of this ministry. Every Seed that you sow is used to fulfill our mission of proclaiming the gospel of Jesus to the world. Your giving will bring forth fruit.

"Move in faith and see God multiply your seed sown." (Luke 6:38)

Pray over your seed and expect an abundant harvest. Know that your seed is being sown into good ground and will be used to bring the Word with simplicity and power to the whole world. God bless you for being obedient!

Gee, where have I heard this before?

I see that W.V. Grant, after going to prison for tax fraud, is still up to his same old tricks. And I mean exactly the same old tricks. In that article a local news station completely exposed him, once again.

I suppose Oral Roberts is too old now and discredited to bother about, but I did read where he and his son Richard are saying, once again, that Jesus is coming back soon.

I really got a kick out the book. Randi and his collaborators went all out to nail these guys! It was very amusing to read about Randi creeping down hallways like James Bond, or skeptics dressing up like old ladies to bust these charlatans. I guess the late 80s were sort of a "wild west" heyday for skeptics.

I notice that Randi doesn't deal much with big-time "faith healers" anymore. I suppose he exposed the whole scheme so well in that book, and on video, that he can't be bothered to continue lopping off hydra heads forever?

Oral and his son are still around he personally dosent do much TV anymore but I saw him on Benny Hinn last week still talking about his magic right hand and casting out demons.

Richard Roberts and his wife have a show where they heal people and beg for money. What makes you think he was discredited? You cant discredit a man of god by any means to the true believer. Oral Roberts University is going strong.

Ernest Angley is comming to my area this month I am going to go and try to get on stage. I have not decided what I will say when he puts the mic in my face yet. He has turned pure evil healing people in Africa from AIDS by the thousands at a time. Its hard to watch, thousands of infected people suddenly thinking they are cured, he has no conscience.

I was talking mainly about how Oral Roberts discredited himself. With the 900ft Jesus and claiming he would be struck down by God if his followers did not cough up $8 million.

Anti_Hypman, I hope you wil make a post here about your run-in with Angley. That would be great. Do you have anything devious in mind?

Nothing specific yet. I have read the book and been watching his shows. He is using the same old tricks I think I have his system figured out and I can get on stage.

At the very least I can go into a sudden fit when he does one of the mass heals and chicken dance around the room until they toss me out or something. If I dont get on stage I can still disrupt service and make him feel a little less welcome in my town.

I plan on bringing my autogtaphed copy of the faith healers hidden in a bible cover. If I arrive early maybe I can catch him comming in and try to get his autograph on the page with his picture.

Its on the 24th, Indianaoplis Indiana. If anyone in the area is interested in helping contact me.

That would be golden to get his autograph in "The Faith Healers." Can you have someone videotape your stunt on stage? That would be classic.

I dont think so, thus far I am the only conspirator. I asked for help here a while back and got no responses I dont think anyone lives near me. sometimes I think Im the only heathen in Indiana despite the strange fact that I have never seen a empty strip club parking lot.

Just a thought, Anti_Hypeman:

Perhaps posting your plans on a public forum isn't your best move. It is possible that some of these guys use things like "Google Alerts" to let them know when they are mentioned on the web, to see who has caught on to them.

RSLancastr is probably right, but the chances are slim that Angley's deluded followers even know anyone who reads here... or reads at all, other than the Bible.

Anti_Hypeman, perhaps you can try some atheist forums to find some co-conspirators in your area?

I wasn't referring to "believers," but to the con-artists and/or their staff.

Perhaps they don't worry enough to care, but look how fast W.V. Grant left town when his con was exposed by the local news. I would say that these people might keep an ear to the ground to see if there is any serious debunking going on in the next town they will be visiting.

Then again, maybe they aren't that smart.

I just know that, for example, I wouldn't mention the specifics of any of my "StopKaz" activities in any public forum, if I thought those specifics would be of any use to "Kaz" herself.

For example, if I knew of a church where she would be appearing, and I intended to go and see her presentation, I wouldn't talk about it here in the JREF Forum until after the fact.

Just a thought.

I dont care im not concerned about being outed. I doubt he is searching the forums for plots against him. The seats are free so there is really nothing they can do to stop me from getting in.

If they care that much to track down pictures of me and post guards at the door then I guess I will go play putt-putt instead no big loss.

Anti_Hypeman, I wish you luck with your efforts to take Angley to the wood-shed.

After reading of Randi's exploits in "The Faith Healers" it's got me motivated to do some "field work" of my own. This kind of relates to the recent thread "Don't Agonize, Organize."

It would be nice to have a "secret area" where we could coordinate strikes against charlatans, swindlers and quacks.
