UK decides against gardasil vaccine

I thought Scotland had already decided to use Gardasil? Or am I mistaken? We had a separate thread about that when it was announced.

This report seems to be another example of the recently-criticised BBC habit of reporting on England-only issues as if they affected the whole of the UK. The DoH only covers England, because health is devolved.

Rolfe.

You are correct, as usual.
I had forgotten the gardasil scotland stuff - but that was sooooo last year.

The Terrence Higgins Trust said it was disappointed at the "short-sightedness" of the decision, and accused the government of a false economy.

"It seems that the UK is fated to be not just the poor man of Europe but also the warty one."

This quote just made my day.

I believe the general rules are:

1) If a Scottish, Welsh or Northern Irish person achieves something of merit, she is referred to as British.

1a) If a person with any family links whatsoever to the UK does something of merit, it is mentioned several times that her mother/father/great-uncle is/was British.

2) If a Scottish, Welsh or Northern Irish person does something badly or terrible, she is referred to as Scottish, Welsh or Northern Irish.

It's in keeping with past goverment policy on the issue.

Isn’t it still available only to girls/women in the U.S.?

Cervarix isn't approved here yet at all. It's got some high-tech adjuvant the FDA doesn't know what to make of. They're working out how to approve it, though.
Gardasil is only approved for females, but I think guys can and do get it off label sometimes. Official approval for males should be happening within a year or two.

What's truly frightening is that there are organized efforts here in the US to block distribution of Gardasil (and to promote a scare campaign in the media) because "it would encourage girls to have sex" if they get it.
I'm not making this up, I swear.
Somehow these troglodytes believe that the only way to get HPV is to be promiscuous before marriage. The idea that a woman who is faithful and wed can get it from her husband never enters their tiny teeny brains...

I think it comes down to this: If my daughter developed cervical cancer and I hadn't gotten her vaccinated against it, I'd feel guilty for the rest of my life.
