I'm trying out the Ubuntu version of Linux - quite impressed so far and I'm thinking of installing it properly on one of our two computers (as soon as I get around to replacing the dead motherboard on the other). Anyone else tried it? I'd be particularly interested in knowing how fast it is compared to XP (can't make comparisons myself as I'm running Ubuntu from CD).

I run Mandriva on a couple of machines that dual boot with XP and I think they kick XP's butt in performance. I find it snappier and more responsive when comparing similar apps. I also find that it takes considerably less care and feeding.

I use it for managing and manipulating digital photos, internet use, burning CDs, ripping MP3s and any document preparation. I use Windows for games and web browsing when I don't want to bother rebooting.

I'va become paranoid and absoutely will not do my banking or read my email from a windows computer.

I installed on my dad's computer last week. I didn't do any through testing but I was pretty impressed. It seemed pretty snappy, can't give any hard numbers. Open Office 2 opened quickly. I also didn't feel overloaded with 10 million versions of everything like a typical install. Can't say anything about network transfers as my dad is on dialup only.

The install did seem to take forever.

Well, the Live CD version found the internet connection and worked straight away - it feels as quick when browsing as XP but I suppose I'll have to download something to test it properly.
