Ubuntu and USB toys

I recently installed Ubuntu but am now finding that almost all of my USB gadgets will not work, and Ubunty will not read the disks that they came with so I cna't install any drivers because they are all EXE files, and the manufacturers have no clue where to find Linux-formated drivers.

I'm gonna have to changed back to Windows. I'm sorry but I need my voice recorder for my lectures and I need my digital camera, and I need my mouse because my laptop's touchpad gives me carpal tunnel issues. The Ubuntu help forums are over my head, as is Wine installation. Nobody anywhere can give me a step ->step ->step ->step directions that I'm used to and can actually understand. I'm tired of wasting hours on the internet everyday on a computer that keeps freezing up, looking for answers and not finding them and not getting any sleep or schoolwork done meanwhile. This is really irritating.

This is a common complaint about Linux; part of the problem is that the manufacturers don't see a need to release drivers for Linux because few are using their device in Linux, but few are using their device in Linux because there are no drivers.

Wine won't work for device drivers, by the way; it's irrelevant to your problems with the devices.

Odd that the mouse won't work, though; it's a standard USB mouse, right? Should work with no problem. Does for me, anyway.

The other devices depend on how they work; how old is your camera? (Modern cameras appear as USB drives to the computer, just like those little USB thumbdrives.)

Anyway, it's too bad that it didn't work out for you. I hope the freezing problems clear up, too; if not, I'd guess that it's the hard drive.
